Ford reaping solid profits after turnaround

DEARBORN, Mich. — Four years ago, Ford mortgaged everything down to the blue oval logo to save itself. Now, even as Americans remain skittish about the economy, it's reaping big rewards and stealing business from stumbling rivals.

Ford said Friday that it made $2.6 billion from April through June, its fifth straight quarterly profit. The company, which reported record losses in 2008, now predicts it will end 2011 with more cash than debt.

With its two longtime Detroit rivals still finding their way after spending time in bankruptcy last year, Ford, which never took government bailout money, extended its success story.

Just got my wife a Mazda 626. After we got it home, I noticed a small UAW sticker on the back side window.

The 626 and the Tribute are made in the USA, in a Ford Plant.

Thanks. I forget to mention the best part, I traded in a Dodge! ‘03 Dodge Dakota, not a bad truck but it was starting to show some wear and tear and it was a gas guzzler.

We bought a 2010 Edge Limited last August. Great car. Fun to drive. Still haven’t gotten it broken in. Lots of power for a heavy vehicle and get reasonable mileage for its 2 ton weight.

“if I ever buy another American car it will be a Ford”

Ditto, although I likely won’t buy an American car again. I can’t get past the UAW stench!

Lucky me, I bought Ford when it was under $6/share.

I like the Edge but I bought this:

2011 KIA Serento. It $4000.00 less money with more standard features. The Edge is a little faster but the KIA handles a little better and can seat 7. I got the V6 AWD. I also get lifetime drive train on it.

Yeah what are they building here, a precision and durable piece of high performance driving machinery with a proud and long tradition of racing success...or a friggin' roll of toilet paper?

My wife has a ‘04 Escape. She loves it. I have a ‘05 F-150 4x4. I like it, in the same way I cherish a good tool that works. Good luck trying to get them away from us.

The 626 hasn’t been made in years. Do you mean Mazda 6?

The 6 is made in the same factory (as I understand it actually on the same line- and yes I know the platform is completely different) as the Mustang. Said factory is owned 50% by Ford and 50% by Mazda.

I just bought a 2010 Flex. Love it or hate it styling but it’s comfortable, quiet and has a lot of room. The white roof makes it look like a Mini Cooper on steroids. I’m enjoying the SYNC voice command system...it’s amazing.

I’m looking at a Ford, too. A ‘70 or ‘71 van. Started at $1800.00 3 months ago, down to $1000.00 now. I think $800.00 will take it, though. I prefer older vehicles.

Oddly enough, the bailout may have helped Ford, but not in the way dingy Harry thinks.

It seems that companies that accept government help do worse than those that don’t. The free market always triumphs in the end.

Bought our first Ford a couple of months ago, ALWAYS had GMC. It was tough and I miss my Yukon:( But they didn’t take bail out money, so Ford gets our business.

Nobody wants to buy an Obama Motors car.

That’s the truth. I just bought a new 2011 Sonata and didn’t even consider GM or the other one. The Fords I looked at were UAW products at a higher price than Hyundai and a lousy warantee. Easy decision to make.

Sorry for the ps: I meant to say also that the Sonata was American made by non union labor. Love the car.

Last summer, I bought a used (14k mi) 2008 F150 for $4000 under Bluebook, and a few weeks ago it saved my life. (FR thread).

I'm probably going to be an F150 driver for quite some time now. The rental I'm using is an F-150, and I'm hunting around for another good deal on an '08 or '09, in case I don't decide to grab a new one when the insurance check comes in.

The 6 it is. I'm slipping in my old age.

The wife loves the car.
