WikiLeaks Unloads Classified Docs Showing Pakistan's Duplicity

Expect this story from the New York Times to restart the discussion on U.S. policies and strategies in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Under the headline “Pakistani Spy Service Aids Insurgents, Reports Assert,” a team of Times reporters summarize and analyze a huge batch of secret U.S. intelligence reports on the war in Afghanistan. Those reports show, in compelling detail, that Pakistan’s ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) has been actively – and regularly – aiding insurgents fighting Americans in Afghanistan.

The documents, to be made available by an organization called WikiLeaks, suggest that Pakistan, an ostensible ally of the United States, allows representatives of its spy service to meet directly with the Taliban in secret strategy sessions to organize networks of militant groups that fight against American soldiers in Afghanistan, and even hatch plots to assassinate Afghan leaders.

SO WikiLeaks based in Sweden which protects journalists with sensitive information, posted the war logs late Sunday.

Homeland Security had gone after WikiLeaks editor in vain at New York hacker conference.

Jacob Appelbaum: "Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was a no-show at the annual New York City hacker conference HOPE, after five Homeland Security agents turned up the day before he scheduled to speak."

"After an army intelligence analyst blew the whistle and leaked 150,000 State Department classified diplomatic cables and an aerial attack video to Wikileaks, conference organizers warned in June that Assange, a scheduled keynote speaker, might not turn up if hew wanted to avoid detention."

"Jacob Appelbaum, who is involved in Wikileaks and is a programmer for Torsoftware, which protects Internet traffic from eavesdroppers by routing it through multiple computers and encrypting its contents, spoke instead."

"We believe that it is absolutely necessary to accept documents that are relevant," he said, "relevant because they are classified, censored or otherwise, restricted. This is extremely important because this is the type of material that is going to be making the most amount of change">

Elements within Pakistan's intelligence are said to be "working" with Islamists

Pakistani intelligence officials have been recently leaking information to the press suggesting that Pakistan is brokering talks between President Karzai and the Haqqani group, a long-time protege of Pakistan's ISI intelligence service

Elements within the Pakistani intelligence services are widely suspected of "working" with the very militant groups that are involved in killing thousands of Pakistanis - both military and civilian.

But the policy of turning these militant sanctuaries into no-go areas for civilian government, journalists and other civilian observers has cast a pall of doubt on the activities there.

"What we have to always figure out with Pakistan is: are they working with the Taliban to support the Taliban or to recruit sources in the Taliban?" Gen Petraeus stated during his confirmation hearing before a panel of the US senate.
