Earlier this year, Southwest Airlines, came under fire for removing an overweight passenger from a flight. Now, five months later, the airline has done it again

What if this had been a star athlete, say NFL?

Then he would have been flying first class on an airline that offers that rather than flying Southwest.

As a matter of fact, yes I have.

If the bulbous boy held two tickets to the standby’s one, revenue almost always trumps common sense. If he had but one ticket for one seat, I’d say the agent that made this decision is in trouble...may be in trouble anyway.

From the article that posted earlier.

A late-arriving passenger required two seats because of her girth.

Can someone please find the information in the article where it said the teenager was late arriving? I can’t find it anywhere. Oh, that’s because people on this thread are making assumptions about what happened and judging this young person unfairly because of their prejudices.

Actually it sounds like you are letting your feelings get in the way of understanding.

It is QUITE SIMPLE - they gave the standby a seat and put her on the plane -- IE THE PLANE WAS LOADED ALREADY -- this in an of itself says the Teen was LATE, as they would not have given her seat(s) away unless she HAD NOT CHECKED IN ON TIME!

Is it really that hard to understand, or are you willfully ignoring what is Airline policy and simple common since in your haste to berate everyone for being so mean?

And the link in post 47 says - what we already know - that the obese kid was a late arriving passenger.

This is the crux of the matter. As far as I’m concerned - the kid was a no-show. Missed boarding - therefore missed the flight.

So the skinny woman had every right to be on that flight - even as a standby.

But she got bumped. And because she was not a 300 pounder, she was discriminated against.

I see a year’s worth of free flights for the skinny woman.

I thought there was one extra seat next to the teen. That was the seat they sold to the standby not the seat the teen had purchased. That is the seat in dispute. Isn't it possible that the teen wasn't necessarily late, but it may have been assumed the teen was going to fit when she boarded, so they sold the ticket for the seat next to the teen to the standby. Meanwhile, on the plane, the teen didn't fit, the standby guest gets on the plane. The teen had to buy the next seat or get off, called a parent, got the ticket paid for. The standby woman had to leave because the teen was on the plane with a reservation, boarded and because of Southwest's policy had to buy an extra seat.

Just because YOU don’t know how the woman knew doesn’t mean she didn’t. If I had to guess, the stewardess explained the situation to the woman. Moreover, the reporter, who had talked to SWA, would have corrected the claim in the story if that were true. In fact, if SWA hadn’t confirmed it, the quote probably wouldn’t have shown up. Moreover, SWA wouldn’t be all that concerned about “apologizing” if the only issue had been bumping a full-fare standby passenger who complained and was rudely told to knock it off because the teen had bought two seats.

In all likelihood, the unpleasant discussion on the plane with the crew had to do with the fact that she knew that they had given the seat that she had a right to as a full-fare standby to the teen who had only paid for one seat.

If the fat teen paid for only one seat, they had not right to bump the thin woman. Having said that, I’d be willing to be wrongfully bumped if I could get a free year’s worth of flying ;-)

She was discriminated against (apparently) because she wasn't a 14 year old girl (seemingly) flying by herself.

We'll never know the full reasoning in why the airline needed to put this 14 year old kid on the plane - Parents/Guardian left airport already...Maybe? Who's going to watch the kid if guardian has left? would there be another article about abandoning children in waiting rooms?

We just don't have any more info than fat kid/short woman

Let’s re-write the scenario.

There is one empty seat. The standby gets it.

Oops. After boarding here comes a husband and wife (with internet fares). They don’t want to fly separately. Don’t want to take a later flight.

So they get rewarded for being late by bumping off a passenger who paid full price at the counter?

That makes no sense. It’s unfair.

She was flying Standby and was seated on the plane.

Everytime I have flown Standbys are Seated last, if he arrived after the Stand bys were ticketed and seated then by definiiton he was.......Late

Not enough information in article by Fox. They really should tighten up before releasing this type of BS. It is not like Obama knew about Lockerbie and lied; did they report that yet?
No opinion on this item, wasted too much time already.

I doubt the parent was allowed beyond the screening area, so at that point the airline had assumed responsibility for the teen. They had to get her to her destination.

Anything in your scenario is possible.

Except one thing. As you know by know (see links upthread) the teen was late.

Fat/skinny/whatever. If you’re late - if you miss the boarding - then you should be considered a no-show.

I have now read the Sacramento Bee story. It had far more information than the Fox stories. (That’s unfortunate) Anyway, my apologies for basing my opinions on what was in the news article, but that’s all I saw.

That being said, I don’t think there’s any reason to humiliate anyone like that. Particularly a teenager who is struggling with his/her weight. And I’m mostly angry at the haters on this thread who seem so insensitive to the feelings of others. I can’t assume that those who have ridiculed the teen in this thread have not ever been overweight teenagers themselves, but I have a pretty strong feeling they have not.

My guess is that you all support Obamacare’s ideology that fat people should all just die. Fat people aren’t entitled to liberty or life or the pursuit of happiness. Fat people should all just be dead.

I’m sorry, but liberty and freedom are gifts granted to all citizens, not just skinny people.

_______________________________________________

We don’t know if the 14 year old was by herself ot not. But we do know this: She was too fat for one seat.

And (see post 9) SWA has a loonngggg history of discrimination in favor of fat peple getting away with buying one seat when they need two. Or three.
