Wait! There's even more dirt on Rangel

WASHINGTON -- Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel said yesterday that investigators have unearthed new allegations of misconduct against him, while House Democratic leaders increased the pressure on him to reach a settlement before a congressional trial starts Thursday.

"We waited almost two years, and they finally investigated, and guess what -- they have some more alleged violations," Rangel said.

The embattled pol did not reveal whether the latest accusations were previously unknown to the public or were related to the original charges that prompted the probe by the House Ethics Committee.

The alleged misdeeds include Rangel using House stationery to solicit contributions for a self-named center at City College, failing to disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets, and not paying taxes on rental income from his Dominican villa -- all first reported by The Post. He also kept four rent-regulated apartments in Harlem.

House Democratic leaders were pressuring Rangel to make a deal before the politically embarrassing trial is set to begin, Politico.com reported.

Last night, Rangel met with one of his lawyers and two Democratic leaders.

If he had been Republican or some other normal person, he would have been forced to resign after weeks of negative press. Since he has two forms of protection, he’s coasting to a light tap on the wrist.

Maybe but the talk is that Charlie has to run again in order to raise money to pay all the legal bills he owes.

Heck all he has to do is have someone ghost-write some memoir-diatribe-tell-all-polemic-manifesto concoction and he'll get a seven figure advance from any publisher out there, especially if he spends most of it dumping dirt on republicans. Charlie knows where plenty of bodies are buried and that's worth serious coin without the hassles of running a campaign.

1] Old guys eventually become expendable, and Charlie's number is up.,p>2] We all know there will never be any real punishment

The logical conclusion would be that this is all just a dog-and-pony show so the mindless masses will have less time to think about the economy and the imminent failure of their 'historic' administration.

This has Alinsky written all over it.

List of current members of the United States House of Representatives by seniority

On the surface it would appear to be Pete Stark (D-CA), but when Rangel temporarily stepped down from his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means (taxes) Committee, Stark was only in for a couple of days before he was replaced, because he is both crazy mean, and tends to sexually harass. Nobody wanted him in that job.

(Oddly enough, they went all the way to #19 among Democrats, Sander Levin (D-MI) to take over Ways and Means, and there must be a heck of a story behind skipping over all the others.)

Technically, absent both Obey and Rangel, George Miller (D-CA) would take the job. However, being passed over for Ways and Means likely indicates that there is either something seriously wrong with him, or he has no interest in the Ways and Means chair—which may or may not carry over to Appropriations.

Just from this exercise, you can see that they spend a lot of time figuring out who to put in what job. They divide by faction, interest, tradition, rules, some degree of competency, favors owed and get even payback, etc.
