DC Metro crash spurs federal oversight push

Supporters of a bill that would give federal regulators power to force transit agencies to make safety improvements are rallying around a ruling that the lack of federal oversight contributed to the fatal Metro crash in Washington last year.

Supporters believe the National Transportation Safety Board's strong language favoring federal oversight will make it easier to convince lawmakers that it is needed nationwide. But Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., put a hold on the bill to keep it from being fast-tracked through Congress after Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., introduced it last week.

The federales have a seat at the table governing Metro and always have had.

What we have in the Metro situation is a demonstration of why federal regulation is usually a totally unmitigated failure ~ just like the MMS folks regulating oil wells by drinking and whoring.

Like some things just aren't s'posed ta' work!

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (often abbreviated as WMATA and commonly referred to as Metro) is a tri-jurisdictional government agency created by an interstate compact, authorized by Congress, that operates transit service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including the Washington Metro and Metrobus. WMATA is jointly funded by the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland.

>>>>>> The Federales do not run this system and have as much oversight as they do over New York City’s. I am against more Federal regulation here because I am sick of burgeoning legions of Federal drones and lard-arses living off my taxes
