Who Needs BP When You've Got Tom Barrett?

Submitted by Michael Brickman on Thu, 08/05/2010 - 11:39am

In 2004, when Tom Barrett was running for mayor, he promised to stop dumping sewage into Lake Michigan:

"Barrett said he would like to curtail the practice of 'blending' partly treated sewage flows with fully treated flows"

Now, more than six years later, Tom Barrett is still dumping sewage into Lake Michigan BILLIONS of gallons at a time. As Widgerson and others have noted, Barrett's dump during the recent Milwaukee flood was, by volume, many times worse than the BP oil spill.

In all, Barrett's sewage dumps are nearly 40 times worse than the BP oil spill, and that doesn't account for the massive difference in size between Lake Michigan and the Gulf of Mexico. When you account for size, Tom Barrett's polluting is 19,707 times worse than BP's! Barrett's dumps of 8.2 billion gallons of waste into Lake Michigan is the proportional equivilant of 4.1 trillion gallons of waste into the Gulf! Enjoy your swimming and fishing Wisconsin! While the Obama Administration's appointed EPA head was in town meeting with Dem Candidate for governor, and current Mayor of Milwaukee Tom Barrett to discuss the city's role as a water technology center, the Walker campaign took a timely and so far under-reported shot.

Milwaukee homes were filled with sewage a little over a week ago when the sewer system was overworked. Homes were razed and millions of gallons of untreated sewage were dumped into Lake Michigan.

In 2004, Barrett vowed in a campaign ad to address the problem of sewage dumping during his first 100 days in office if elected. To date, no plan or any other improvement has been announced and citizens of Milwaukee have been forced to deal with poisoned waters and beaches and sewage backed up into their homes.
