Laptops for the Kiddies...time for school!!

I own an Acer Aspire 6920 with 64bit 4 gig Ram Runs at a 2.0 It has a lot of storage but I cannot figure out where to look to tell you how much.

I need to replace the Acer with a similar or slightly better machine. I will give this machine to my son, to homeschool, except it has vista on it so I am thinking of replacing the vista with the new os 8. Good idea.

Please do not discuss alternative os universes with me because I can barely manage with MS, never mind something that requires thought.

I also need a lower end computer for my 12 year old for homeschooling.

This Acer has been a jewel. I want the same quaity but I dont see anything similar for any sort of reasonable price...I think I paid around 850 for this guy.

Any thoughs from the Freeper laptop community?

I’ve personally had awesome service from Thinkpads (IBM/Lenovo) and recommend them often. They’re pricier than many other brands but IMHO worth the little extra.

Windows 7 will likely make it run like the proverbial bat. Machines had to be musclebound just to make Vista go at all.

I honestly don’t have experience with Sony. Currently I have Apple and Toshiba at home and Dell for work, all have been great. I have had terrible experience with Gateway.

Go to Dell.com. Look at the bottom of the page for “Dell Outlet”. You can find laptops at about half price.

GO to fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net hourly and keep your eye out for laptop deals.
If you are willing to sign up for certain rebate programs, you can now buy an equivalent laptop for under $450 all inclusive shipped to your door.

Also, check out the lenovo factory outlet, (horrible customer service, incredible prices)

the dell refurbished outlet,

if you have a microcenter retail store near you, check out the microcenter.com open box laptop section,

check out the newegg.com open box/return section

sign up for the buy.com daily email (though buying a laptop from buy.com is a frightful experience if anything is defective)

Thanks for the reply. I have only had an IBM Think Pad (years ago and) and the Sony Vaio. I had great luck with both but things have changed a lot in the last few years (5)

Actually, not to be pedantic, but it’s Mac (or Macintosh), not MAC. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control, the physical address of your NIC (Network Interface Card). I’m sure you really wanted to know all that. :-)

I have always notied that when I buy something where the box has been retaped shut, it is something that was returned and put back on the shelve to resell. Walmart and other big stores do it because manypeople wont bother to return it after they sell it again.

Sooo am i just going to get someone elses problems by purchasing a return, or will it be fixed?
