Former Republican U.S. Senator Ted Stevens was aboard a plane that crashed in Alaska, and it was not immediately clear whether he survived, a congressional source said on Tuesday. Half of those aboard the plane were killed in the crash and a doctor is apparently on the scene, though rescuers are having trouble reaching the site because of bad weather, the source said, declining to be further identified. Stevens lost his re-election bid in 2008 after he was convicted on corruption charges, but the case was later thrown out because of prosecutorial misconduct.

If anyone survived, there will be the whole surviving in remote Alaska scenario to deal with.

Hopefully rescue crews get there quickly.

“JUNEAU, Alaska – A plane believed to be carrying eight people, including former Sen. Ted Stevens and former NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe, crashed in southwest Alaska and rescue crews were trying to reach the wreckage Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said there were possible fatalities. Five people were on scene early Tuesday helping the crash victims, he said. It was unclear how they reached the site.”

Didn’t Alaska lose a Senator in the Russian shoot down of Flight 007?

"The official tells The Associated Press Alaska authorities have been told the former longtime Republican senator is among several passengers on the plane. The official, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, says Stevens' condition is unknown.

Defense contractor EADS North America says former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe was also a passenger on a small plane that crashed last night in Alaska.

But Stevens was in a crash in 1978 that killed his wife.

I didn’t realize they had gotten a conviction under false pretenses, got him removed from office, and then the case was thrown out. Ay God, I swear there is only ONE THING that these communists understand.

I think that was Congressman Don Young in whose district the bridge to nowhere was to be built, who got that earmark.

I hold no brief for the typical old pol, Ted Stevens, but I believe he was erroneously “credited” with the inception of that fiasco.

That said, dying in a plane crash or possibly having died, is a whole other topic...to my mind, that is.
