Muslims around the world could be setting their watches to a new time soon when the world's largest clock begins ticking atop a soaring skyscraper in Islam's holiest city of Mecca.
Saudi Arabia hopes the four faces of the new clock, which will loom over Mecca's Grand Mosque from what is expected to be the world's second tallest building, will establish Mecca as an alternate time standard to the Greenwich median.
The clock is targeted to enter service with a three-month trial period in the first week of the holy month of Ramadan on or about August 12, according to the Saudi state news agency SPA.

lol.. It’d fit right in on the Strip in Vegas except they don’t allow no clocks there.. :-)
I doubt that they are going to do anything more sophisticated than install a GPS receiver and set their clocks at some constant offset from UTC, that offset being determined by the longitude of Mecca furnished by their GPS receiver. If the GPS constellation ever goes down, they would have no way of knowing what time it is.

This will basically set a new meridian. Greenwich is the current standard and is the basis of stellar navigation. The sky is measured north-south in azimuth, but east-west is done in hours of ascension, with Greenwich the zero point, a line from pole to pole going through the Royal Observatory’s transit telescope.
It’s a new year when Sirius transits the meridian at midnight.
Establishing a Muslim meridian will have more consequences than just time zones.
I expect that once the new meridian is declared by the Saudis, the UN will be pressured to take it up and implement it.
Then, there will be Muslim maps that show Earth with a new gridline on it, with zero not at Greenwich (where the imperialist crusaders selfishly put it) but through Mecca.
This way everyone at the mosque can know the time of the next caning of a woman!
I would imagine employers will have to have a special time clock for muslims.

I have heard eschatology teachers talking about how the antichrist will change dates (completely get rid of B.C, A.D and change the year). I hadn't thought about resetting the clocks for Mecca time.
