Swedish man gets $1mn speeding ticket

A Swedish driver who was caught driving at 290 km/h (180 mph) in Switzerland is likely to receive a world-record speeding fine of one million dollars.

The 37-year-old man, who was driving his Mercedes SLS AMG, was clocked along the A12 highway between Lausanne and Bern in Sweden last week.

Swiss police arrested the driver and confiscated his car.

"Nothing can justify a speed of 290 km/h," BBC quoted local police spokesman Benoit Dumas as saying.

"It is not controllable. It must have taken 500 meters to stop," Dumas added.

The man defended himself on the grounds that his car's speedometer may have been faulty.

Yeah, it got stuck on the right side of the dial.

The Swiss use speed cameras.

The cops do not have anything to catch him or they could not have claimed how dangerous it was.

Somebody needs a lesson in geography.

This story should be of concern to us all, as it represents “experimental law”, that could come back to bite us all.

A guiding principle of the law is equality before the law. Most of us are familiar with how nasty the law can be if it is oppressive to one group of people, because of who they are. In past there have been many groups who have been persecuted this way—and the end result is always bad.

But governments that used to persecute the poor are now having the idea of persecuting the wealthy. And since there are not that many wealthy people, if it works, they will turn on the middle classes.

How would you feel if a minimum wage worker got a $10 speeding ticket, but because you have a good job, you have to pay $500, even though you both were going the same speed?

And no reason that this is just limited to speeding, or cars. How would you like to be punished more, just because government thinks “you can afford to pay more”?

It already has. Punishing success happens every day in America in the form of over-taxing the 'rich'. What's worse is, the government gets to decide who qualifies as 'rich'.

The term 'more money than brains' comes to mind on this one.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG costs close to $200,000. (U.S.) and supposedly is electronically limited to 197 mph top speed, so the car wasn't running totally flat-out at 180. Frankly, anyone who can afford a car that cost $200,000. can probably afford attorneys to fight the million-dollar fine, which is preposterous, even for a rich guy driving at insane speeds on a public highway. However, jail time might be more appropriate for anyone this reckless.

I've driven on the autobahn in Germany. Its hills are flatter and its curves straighter. Additionally, it's made from 24” think concrete so it's incredibly flat and smooth. Driving fast on an autobahn does not automatically equate to reckless. That would depend on the conditions of the car and traffic.

I explored Germany in a brand new Saab 9-5 Turbo. It maxed out at 240 k/h, or 149mph. I was passed by only one car, a Boxter. High speeds are not uncommon but you have to watch for the speed zones.

Obama to introduce similar federal speeding laws soon.

David Letterman’s tickets might just bail out NY.

Yep.... Good fun for a young Texan.

Now days I’m running Cummins on the track for my speed fix.

A tweeked drive train an a Cummins 5,9 with compound garret turbos etc make it a fun gofast.

He must have been going even faster than reported if he made a side trip to Sweden in between. :-)
