You see, according to TV Newser, CNN/Time Warner has a severe bed bug infestation and has sent out the following internal e-mail:

Yahoo! now reports that West Wing of White House now covered by a tarp. A bed bug problem there as well? Perhaps Obama will make a special call to Carol Browner to lift the EPA ban on DDT just for him.

They would have to remove beds AND couches AND carpeting AND most of the furniture. Bed bugs were a big problem in the USA in the early 20th century but with the advent of DDT the bed bugs were almost completely eliminated...only to return in force due to the ban.

Googling finds a number of non-DDT insecticides that are supposed to kill bed bugs and be relatively harmless to humans. However, at least one of them (Chlorfenapyr) can’t be shipped to New York... figures!

My friend asked Meng about DDT point blank in the classroom in front of thirty other people. Meng replied that everything any of them had ever heard was a bunch of BULLSHIT, that DDT never harmed anything other than insects and was utterly harmless to hawks and eagles and/or their eggs. He said that the decline in raptor populations from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s was due to farmers and rednecks using them for shotgun practice i.e. that they were dying from lead poisoning, and that after around 1960 farmers started keeping chickens in cages and nobody cared any more, and the raptors came back.
No self respecting redneck would shoot an eagle. Only hicks do that.
