The Drudge Report headline declaring that "Murdoch Gives $1 Million to Haley Barbour" is not technically accurate. In fact, News Corporation (full disclosure: I'm a contributor to Fox News) gave $1 million to the Republican Governors Association, of which Barbour is the chair. But the headline caught my attention because if there's one Republican I'm worried about going into what is sure to be a tough re-election campaign in 2012, it is Haley Barbour.
I know Barbour from his Washington days -- when he did politics in the Reagan White House, helped George Bush Sr. beat my candidate Michael Dukakis in 1988, and served as chair of the Republican National Committee from 1993 to 1997. In terms of political skills, Barbour is unquestionably as good as anyone in the game. During his tenure as RNC chair, his party won back both the House and the Senate for the first time in decades. In 1991, Barbour set up shop as a lawyer-lobbyist, the kind who can, and did, make millions. He was set for life.
But then he did something most people like him, Democrat or Republican, never do. He went home to Mississippi and ran for governor.

Just last night the Spousal Unit and I were talking about potential 2012 Republican nominees for President.
We kicked around a lot of names, none of which really had a good fit for the times.
Then I said “Haley Barbour.”
And we sure hope you republicans don’t throw us in dat briar patch!
That would be just awful too.
Guess I need to read up on him a little more. Looks as though he’s got both legislative and executive experience, and he’s certainly a conservative. Wasn’t there some “scandal” associated with him a few years ago?
One thing’s for certain: who we got ain’t workin’, either on the Hill or in the White House.
Thanks for your service, fellow JAG.

I think after Palen, the viral anti GOP press is beginning to train their sights on him. There have been a few articles in the national news lately postulating he would be a bad candidate because of his southern drawll. That was a way of saying the press intends to paint him as a bumpkin. Of course, that did not cross their minds when Hillbilly Bill was the left’s candidate.
I hope he gets a genuine shot at it.
I like Haley Barbour. I have always liked Haley Barbour.
He’s my pick, too.
No whining. Just doing. No glam. No pretentiousness. A roll up your sleeves kind of guy.
I tend to agree. H.B. is the antithesis of Democrat politics; straight talk, no BS; gives you the impression that you’re in the presence of a grown up. We could do a hell of a lot worse. IMHO
* Remember during Katrina? The sob sisters running Louisiana were running around pointing fingers and making demands while next door in Mississippi, Barbour was calmly doing his job. What a difference competency makes. eh?
I also like Susan Estrich and think she can be counted on to be a straight shooter. It doesn’t matter that her voice is awful and she ain’t easy to look at. She is always pleasant and truthful, unlike so many of the lefty hags these days.
I haven’t seen any pics of him recently. Has he lost any weight?
I ask only b/c I remember he saying something once along the lines of “you’ll know I’m running for Pres. when I start to lose weight.”
I worked for the AFJAG from 1987-89 for General Norris and General Nelson. Loved it....
Ohh goody let’s let a Dem hack with a big mouth help us pick the candidate. Lee Atwater was the one who put Georgie HW Bush in the White House.
Barbour has been my #1 presidential choice for quite some time.
Haley’s always been at the top of my list...when he ran the DNC he had the ‘rats acting like lemmings running over a cliff.

"People want the president to succeed; good Lord, they want the country to succeed, and particularly the first African-American president has a lot of goodwill. . . . We need to be careful, we need to treat the president respectfully, we need to make this about policies, not personal. . . . This is a guy people like.''Governor Haley Barbour, November 2009
Me too...Gingrich gets a lot of credit for 1994 (and rightfully so), but I think Haley Barbour set the stage by getting the party focused and on message in 1992 and 1993.
He’s the anti-Michael Steele....
“I have always liked Haley Barbour.”
So have I. His handling of the effects (and potential effects) of Katrina both before and after was very impressive.
I’d like to see him make a go at it. I was impressed with his work post-Katrina. I need to know more about him. Study time.
