Obama urges Republicans to name political donors

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama Saturday urged Republican leaders in Congress not to block a bill aimed at reducing the role of big corporations and foreign entities in domestic elections.
"This should not be a Democratic issue or a Republican issue," Obama said in his weekly radio address. "This is an issue that goes to whether or not we will have a democracy that works for ordinary Americans -- a government of, by, and for the people."
The president was referring to a landmark decision earlier this year by the US Supreme Court that corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in elections could not be limited under the First Amendment to the constitution.
Obama said the ruling had allowed big corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence US elections without even having to reveal the real players behind the effort.
He added the Congress was considering a bipartisan proposal that would require corporate political advertisers to reveal who was funding their activities.
But the Republican leaders in Congress prevented the bill from even coming up for a vote, the president said.
"This can only mean that the leaders of the other party want to keep the public in the dark," Obama argued.
"They don't want you to know which interests are paying for the ads. The only people who don't want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide."
The president said his administration could not allow what he called "the corporate takeover of our democracy."

Businesses provide products and services. Businesses are what give us jobs and income. Even you people employed by the public sector/government - that money they pay you comes from taxes on people's income (from businesses) and taxes on businesses. Yes, businesses are motivated by profit. Profit is the reward for working harder, smarter, faster, etc. and being successful. Oh, that's right, the left wants to demonize success too. How very "progressive" of them - we should all aspire to be poorer than our neighbors? In short, being anti-business is bafflingly stupid. Everyone depends on businesses in some way for their own livelihood. Being anti-business is simply contradictory to your own self-interests.
Now hussein is somehow trying to demonize and delegitimize business' interest in politics. Businesses have a very valid interest in the political process. As we are witnessing right now, an anti-business administration and Congress can do a lot of damage across a broad spectrum of businesses. Tell me, how's it going in the financial, auto, home, insurance, healthcare, or energy production fields right now? Every industry or economic sector the government steps into it, well, "destroys" is probably just barely too harsh of a word, but certainly trashes.
So yes, if you are a private company or work for a private company it is in your own best interests to throw these anti-business socialists out and never let them back in power. A real economic recovery can only happen with a regime change. We want, no, we need a pro-business, pro-personal freedom, pro-liberty, limited government. We cannot afford a raging, expansionist government driven over our backs by a few self-serving elitists.
