LAS VEGAS (AP) — From flags to Facebook, 22-year-old Jimena Navarrete has quickly made it clear what she plans to promote as the world's newest Miss Universe — her home country of Mexico.

"I want the whole world to know about my country and my people," the Guadalajara native said after beating 82 competitors for global bragging rights at the pageant in Las Vegas.

"I imagine that they're all going crazy in Mexico right now," she said through an interpreter. "I'm extremely proud and I'm sure they're very proud, too."

She’s a little too thin for my tastes.

If former winner Alicia Machado is any indication, that won't be a problem for very long. They usually get real skinny for the competition then afterwards go back to their natural weight.

Navarette is a French name, so she’s got to have a little French blood in her too.

Like she is a true Mexican. More like a European. How come Mexico doesn’t have one of the true Indian Mexicans enter?

Mexican society is still heavily stratified. The Europeans that colonized Mexico are at the top.

You especially see it in entertainment: they are almost indistinguishable from Americans, because we have similar European origins.

The (original) native population is still at the bottom, just scraping by.

Some of her neck is blocked by the fringe-like danglies of her earring.

"I want the whole world to know about my country and my people," the Guadalajara native said

Well, that ought to boost interest in Southern California and Arizona then.

The (original) native population is still at the bottom, just scraping by.

The Mexican ruling class is trying to help by dumping them across the border as fast as they can.
