Republican insurgents from the far right did well in Tuesday’s primaries. What their campaigns lack in logic, compassion and sensible policy seems to be counterbalanced by a fiercely committed voter base…
This is an attack on voters thinly disguised as a critique of candidates:
Much of the G.O.P’s fervid populist energy has been churned up by playing on some people’s fears of Hispanics and Muslims, by painting the president as a dangerous radical, by distorting the truth about the causes of the recession. Far too many Republican leaders have eagerly fed that destructive anger.
They make a feint toward the idea that it’s not the voters fault, i.e. it’s the “leaders” who bamboozled them. Of course that only works if the voters are easily bamboozled. The Times’ arrogance really shines through in a phrase like this one:

Has the GOP forgotten how politically charged the term 'liberal' was 20 years ago? Democrats couldn't run away from the label fast enough.
Has the GOP forgotten the most fundamental rule of politics?

I remember in the 70’s there was a type of rock labled as Progressive Rock. I still to this day have no idea how a type of music can be progressive. I also have no idea how a political movement can be progressive without the second part of the equation inherent in the word....progressing towards what?
In the latter case I think it it is safe to say the answer is Marxism. In the former case, i.e. Progressive Rock, I still have no idea.
The real reason the Times is running scared is that it is accustomed to dealing with establishment Republicans who it can control with a curl of the editorial lip. The ones who are coming aren't afraid of that, and the bullies are looking at one another a little uneasily.

"...some people’s fears of Hispanics" = some people actually don't like folks who come here illegally, attempt to gain access to every possible government and private handout, use our emergency rooms for their ninos sniffles, overcrowd our schools with their spanish-only parasites, drive cars without licenses or insurance, and send money home to Mexico because we're footing the bill for their lifestyle.
How dare they not willingly sacrifice for these poor "immigrants"?
"some people’s fears of Muslims..." = some people actually think that Muslims building a victory mosque where cowardly terrorist Muslims killed and injured thousands of non-combatant Americans is inappropriate.
"...painting the president as a dangerous radical..." = mentioning that the prez is a close associate of one of America's worst domestic terrorists, that he attended a church with a rabid racist bigot as pastor, that he worked for the criminal organization ACORN, that he's filled his cabinet with extreme socialists and avowed Communists, that he's made many racially divisive statements, that he's fostered goobermint takeovers of much of our economy, and that he governs like Joseph Stalin.
What's not to like in this very short list of his accomplishments ?
"...by distorting the truth about the causes of the recession..." = acknowledging what the 'rats did to cause the recession via the "Community Reinvestment Act", ad nauseum.
"Far too many Republican leaders have eagerly fed that destructive anger." = A few Republican leaders have seen the light the Tea Party folks are shining on the Washington cesspool, and publicly agreed.
The number of lies the NYT can fit in a short paragraph is astounding !
