The main part of the Mall can easily handle 250,000 which happens every year for Fourth of July fireworks.
You double that number and it should back up toward 14th street (for events focused on the Lincoln Memorial).
You double that, for a million, and that'll fill the entire mall all the way to Capitol Hill.
Alas, they've built buildings on the Mall ~ Museums and such, and that probably whacks 150,000 out of that capacity which would force any crowd of 1 million or more to spill out into the streets and walkways leading to the Mall from the North and the South.
They had about a million for the Obama inauguration ~ at any one time ~ but there were several events drawing crowds so there were probably more than one million people attending, but at different times.
An immense crowd wanted to see him inaugurated. A different and equally immense crowd wanted to see him in the inautural parade.
If you were down there, that morning crowd was probably about 300,000, and the afternoon crowd was more likely up toward 700,000 ~ and a lot of that took place OFF THE MALL on the sidestreets and on Pennsylvania Avenue. It was a friendly crowd, really packed in there, as friendly crowds should be. It was also January so pits weren't a problem.
This particular event looks friendly, but they're keeping their space!
I’ll admit I’m angry. So I don’t think the attempt to paint this in a negative light is going to work. Lots of angry people across America would like to be there to show their “anger”.

A friend of mine quipped, about 20 years ago when it was becoming apparant that the feds were spinning out of control, that the Woodstock generation would save the nation. We'd be there at rallies with canes and gray hair, all retired and missing the fun parts of the '60s...like protests. And what are they going to do? Unretire us?
Protests were a great place to hook up back then. I wonder how many senior citizen romances will happen.
Besides that, the younger ones can observe what a fed up population can do!
I'm a bit confused by your post. Could you clarify? Do you think this event has greater or fewer numbers than the Hussein inauguration?
I know we were chuckling here when we younger ones were seeing grandma and my godparents off for their road trip to attend this 828 rally! Generation X is a bit pitiful, but my daughter's generation seems to be a bit more active. The March For Life shows this every January.
The crowd is way past the end of the pool and outside the treeline.
CSPAN is only doing limited shots of the crowd.

Beck said he had crowd counters so the media can’t lie about it.
If I’m not mistaken, GB said on his show during the week that he had a fool proof way of counting the crowd.

I liked Glenn’s opening comments, where he said the “media” estimated the crowd as being almost a thousand!
