I believe Obama was elected for 2 reasons: (1) libs and independents hated Bush so much that they just wanted a change and (2) there were a fair share of people who also wanted to be part of electing the first black president. For me, McCain was extremely hard to vote for, even though I did. No buzz, no excitement, no energy, WAY past his prime, with health issues.
