But yet many here have absolutely no trouble believing that praying to a deity the sky will cure illness, solve problems, bring you good fortune etc...

I'm not religious but I wish I was. Religious people have many advantages in life. The power of unflappable optimism that comes from faith works. I respect religious people and their beliefs and would never make a disparaging remark about their gift of faith.

I rather doubt this. A man I more or less grew up with, whom I’ve known for over 40 years, died recently at age 51. He’d been an alcoholic since his teens.

For these kinds of studies to have any meaning, the terms must be quantitated.

Age 69 and doing fine. Left beer behind for a regular vodka soda on a daily basis. Losing weight and doing great. Three to four in the evening eliminates sleeping pills. Get better rest which is the test.

Lots of Mormon women in Utah are addicted to drugs as they are all so uptight and ridden with guilt for not being perfect. If they would just have their doctors prescribe a few glasses of wine every night everything would be fine.

You should have been in Mount Carmel Utah this week. What a great time we had. Poured fifteen cases of wine and made at least three hundred Margaritas.

And not one problem with any of it. The winning artist donated his $3,000 prize money to the family of Brian Harris who is our neighbor just one hundred yards south of our place.

The hangover is really kicking in, and you're cursing yourself for having that fourth drink and then a fifth. Remember Tom? That guy at the party who was only sipping Pellegrino? He's probably doing a bit better right now.

This was a frequently used by Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin back in their heyday in Las Vegas (late 50's thru mid-60's). Tomorrow morning I'm going to wake up with a hangover. You abstainer types will wake up feeling fine; how I feel, as the day progresses, will only improve.

While the headline is a little sensationalistic, the actual body copy is a little more reserved.

It basicially says, that the mortality rate is highest for those who had never taken a drink, next highest was heavy drinkers and the lowest mortality rates were for low-to-moderate drinkers, defined as fewer than 3 drinks per day.

Maybe the apocalyptikooks actually are on to something, and the end times are nigh.

FR S.O.P. Is to only read the HEADLINE of a popular media article that is ITSELF simply a partial summary of a scientific paper, and then to make a wide range of extraordinarly disparaging comments about the study and the scientists who performed it (of course, guided entirely by whether you like the result of the study or not.)
