Scarborough wants government to force restaurants to disclose calories; admits libertarian streak was a sham. Ping to Today show list.

Yes, Joe, this is the biggest problem facing America today. We need to know if that Death By Chocolate dessert has a lot of calories. We can’t figure it out by ourselves. The man gets dumber every day, probably because he sits next to Mika.

I was under the impression Joe was conservative, but then I watched his show. It completely did away with any ideas I had that he was conservative. He really just seems to be in love with Mika and wants her approval.

To use a phrase my husband knows better to say “Looks like she’s PMS’ing.” (although a cruder term).

She always looks like that. She reminds me of what my mother looked like before she entered what we would affectionately call her Sunday Morning Bitch. Like clockwork, never failed. We all knew to make ourselves scarce.

Forget the calories and splurge a little, you can count calories at home. How about telling us what is actually in the food they serve, like MSG etc. Don’t make us beg for the info and then lie about it expecting that we won’t know. (we will know!)

I have been watching Joe’s left turn on many isues over the last few months and am convinced that either 1.MSNBC has told him to “tow the party line or 2. He is “banging” Mika and his brain has dropped about 3 1/2 feet.

I think Joe believes he is conservative. I also think he has a strong desire to be liked by the media establishment. That makes him appear completely disassociated; he has gone on some fine conservative rants, and has also displayed an alarming affinity for embracing liberal pronouncements on the evils of certain conservative ideals. He's a hot mess.

“Morning Joe” should be required to put up a warning label screen crawl every day, too.

I don’t see the problem with the calorie information. It’s no different then the nutritional information on the label of a can of soup.

The people who want to know can choose to read the label and decide if this substance should be permitted into their digestive track. And people like me who don’t care just buy what we like. Everybody is covered.

"Scarborough declared that he favors forcing all restaurants to put calorie counts on their menus"

What will this accomplish? For a decade foods you buy at the store have listed the calorie and fat counts on the package and people (we are told) have gotten more obese during that period. So what would this accomplish except put a lot of resturant workers out of a job?

The government that governs least, governs best. It is not the role of the government to impose the additional burden and expense on businesses, that will ultimately be borne by consumers, to comply with some politician’s whim about what people need to know.

The free market will deal with the situation very nicely without need for government interference. If there’s demand for this kind of information then restaurants, pursuing their enlightened self-interest, will provide it.

Couldn’t agree more. Joe has moved decidedly left, it’s obvious to anyone who tunes in from time to time. But you forgot option 3 - Both of the above.

Wouldn’t it be simpler to require resturants not to serve fat people? Or maybe allow fat people only bread and water. Shoosh, if you are fat, you know it. No need bossing a bunch of resturant workers around pretending that you actually watch calories. Put a muzzle on the fatties and they will soon slim down.

Joe is a punk, always has been. Anybody with a dead female intern on his rap sheet and a very close relationship with that other punk, Gary Condit, [Holy Cow, another dead intern!] is a punk with issues and a rhinestone collar to boot. Of course he will do as he is told - what else can he do? What network carries him? Who in blazes watches him?

And the real truth is, if people care about calorie counts it’s SO easy to look up these days. You can carry a book, you can buy a little gizmo or you can even use your fancy phone. If people want to know, they can easily find the answer. And if a restaurant doesn’t list it’s calorie counts somewhere, and it matters to you, don’t eat there.

Precisely: free choice and the free market work.

I don’t eat wheat anymore, and I’ve found most places are very helpful. I’ve even found many are starting to note menu items without gluten and Carrabbas even has a separate gluten free menu. Most places WANT to make their customers happy, and as more people ask for things they are doing it on their own. Big Daddy govt doesn’t have to make rules and force them.

The problem is not the information, I actually like having it there. The problem is the government deciding it MUST be there. Consumers will buy things that suit them. If most people want or need that info and will only buy products with it, the companies will put it there.
