Stephen Hawking Picks Physics Over God for Big Bang

Physics was the reason for the Big Bang, not God, according to scientist Stephen Hawking.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," the professor said in his new book, in a challenge to traditional religious beliefs.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going," he wrote in his book "The Grand Design," extracts of which are printed in London newspaper The Times.

The book, co-written by American physicist Leonard Mlodinow and published next week, sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not have created out of chaos.

He cites the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star other than the Sun.

People who deny God are in the position of asserting something does NOT exist. Where is there anything in science capable of proving something does NOT exist? Waiting, but not holding breath.

God is everything and every where.

Think about it for a minute. When God had to explain to us. People did not know what an atom was, DNA, Proton, a neutron, and electron, etc... So God had to simplify it for them.

Yes God exists and is the real deal. Our understanding of God is in layman’s terms.

I am of the belief that Creation vs. Big Bang are not two separate beliefs. I think they go together.

Science tells us how and religion tells us why.

Occam’s razor tends to point to a natural explanation without an invisible guy in the sky pulling the strings though.

Au Contraire, mi amigo. Occam's Razor, as applied to the beginning of the Universe is quite, simply put, the very essence of God. The Simplest explanation is the most correct............

Where did God come from? If he’s been around forever, why not say gravity has?

Because gravity is part of nature, and therefore must have a source.

As an abstract concept, "God" is something (or someone) Wholly Other, outside of the system we call "nature," and therefore not subject to natural laws.

Whether that Entity has intelligence and will is a separate question, but SOMETHING must exist outside of the system we call "nature" in order for nature to have begun to exist. That Thing does not NEED an origin of cause, because That Thing is entirely different KIND of thing than anything else that is, and therefore not subject to the same rules and laws.

Don’t worry, He can handle it. I often feel sorry for God. What a heartbreaking disappointment mankind has been for Him. I went to the Dachau memorial day before yesterday.

Physicists come and go. God is.

“The fool hath said in his heart, [there is] no God. “
Psalm 53:1

AND...

“It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.”
Psalms 118:8

The Bible has outlived ALL of it’s critics and will outlive everyone that ever lived.

This man gets center stage by the left to help soothe their imbalance.

How was the very first atom created? The first atom that began the Big Bang chain.

Hawking´s playing us all for suckers.

¨I do believe. I don´t believe. I Do. I Don´t.¨

And consequently his book sales are even more robust for this milking.

I’ve read some of Hawkings writing - there is no doubt he is glib, has a remarkable memory and can be really creative in his thinking - but then again - his whole theory is based on a MOUNTAIN of assumptions.

I learned a long time ago that the right set of assumptions can ‘prove’ the ‘truth’ of just about anything. That doesn’t make it right or accurate.

He’s a bitter, crippled, old man - who has become extremely bitter over his handicap.

Realistically, as much as he’s done in his career, he’s still no Einstein.

Just a few more years, and Dr. Hawking will find out for himself.

Riiiiight. And what caused the Big Bang?

Looking around at this marvelous life, I think it takes MORE faith to believe that NOTHING caused it, than to believe that there is an Absolute Being with a purpose.

Humans can no more understand our Creator than a video game character can understand humans -- even after hardware and software make it possible to code "life", intelligence and "consciousness" into video game characters; i.e., create a "universe" for the video game characters. IMO.

How can anything that we are aware of exist without it being in our Creator's "hardware" and "software."

Professor Hawking had previously appeared to accept the role of God in the creation of the universe, writing in A Brief History Of Time in 1988. "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God," he wrote.

I summarized Hawkings' references to God in that book in this post late last year.

“Stuff is popping up out of the vacuum all the time. It’s a something from nothing Universe allatimeeverywhere.”
Right. This was second year physics fifty years ago.

When physicists talk physics to other physicists they don’t make religious assertions.

The only denial of God that I can find in that article was the headline “Stephen Hawking Picks Physics Over God for Big Bang”. Hawking had nothing to do with that. Even in pop science mags reporters are horse’s asses.

It’s not a “God or Physics” thing. In fact, the Catholic Church declared that the Big Bang theory was consistent with the Book of Genesis in the early 50’s, a couple of years after the Big Bang theory was introduced.

Why doesn’t God come down and tell us a new updated version with all the new science involved? Somehow I doubt that’ll happen.

It would be helpful if someone came up with a true revelation in science or anything really that could be verified later via experiment.

M Theory explains things that have existed before our universe, would that help if that part was infinite and proven to be so?

Too bad Steve. Had you been a believer, God would have blessed you with a perfect body upon your death. Now, you’ll prolly be stuck in that chair for eternity in a sweltering non-stop dry heat.
