SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A new controversial California Air Resources Board report concludes that there is a causal relationship between exposure to fine particle pollution and premature death.
The study found that about 9,000 people in California die prematurely each year as a result of exposure to fine particle pollution, which is produced by of a variety of sources including particles in the exhaust of diesel exhaust.
"This study is further evidence that we are on the right track, and CARB will continue to work with truckers and equipment owners to clean up diesel emissions, improve our air quality and protect public health. CARB is committed to reducing this staggering statistic because one premature death is one too many," said CARB Chairman Mary Nichols.
California already has some of the toughest emissions rules of any jurisdiction in North America, but the report suggests that more emission reductions must be achieved through CARB regulations of mobile sources, including trucks.
The CARB report and its methodology were based on recent assessments by the U.S. EPA.
However, the report has detractors.
In fact, a well-respected 36-year veteran UCLA researcher was fired, he claims, because he doubted the science regarding diesel particulate matter and public health.
Even though no one at CARB challenged his work, Dr. James Enstrom says he was terminated on a technicality.
"If there is an ongoing controversy in science, you don't put out regulations that cost billions of dollars," he told media.
Rest In Peace, old friend, your work is finished.....
If you want ON or OFF the DIESEL KnOcK LIST just FReepmail me.....
This is a fairly HIGH VOLUME ping list on some days.....
They want to kill the economy. I swear they do..............
Great! Let California deliver her produce out of state and all her goods in state with nice, efficient horse drawn buggies. That won’t hurt the economy at all...
When I was working on OBDII diagnostics I was at a meeting with someone from CARB.
He told me in no uncertain terms that CARB’s goal was to make sure that eventually NO Diesel engine would ever be allowed in California.
They know as well as I do that 95%+ of Diesel emissions have been eliminated through advances in ECM’s and high pressure rail and injector improvements.
Today’s Diesel engines are not your fathers Diesel engine.
If you see a 1995 or later engine belching white or black smoke from its exhaust then it’s BROKEN.
Europe is embracing small turbocharged Diesels. If we were smart we’d be doing the same!
It’s strictly a political agenda
Keeping my two 06 cummins in black smoke mode just to piss off the environazi’s ! Tired of their crap.
And how many thousands die prematurely from exposure to illegal alien violence?
Kill the one thing that makes electric cars really a joke.
Crucify them!!!

You know, when I was in 9th grade, a friend did a science fair project on the effects of diesel exhaust versus gasoline exhaust on plants.
He exposed plants to diesel and gasoline exhaust fumes over an extended period. The plants exposed to diesel actually did well. The plants exposed to gasoline exhaust did not fare well.
If a ninth grader over 25 years ago gets it, why don’t these “professionals?”
Anyway, the article isn't about fumes, it is about particulates.
Maybe you have heard of asbestosis, silicosis, or black lung disease.
Second, the Progressives have a bit of a problem here. On the one hand, their demonic religion compels them to ban anything and everything that makes civilized life possible. On the other, they are rebelling against their own religion of Evolution and the sacrament of Eugenics in that if there is a genetic link to particulate sensitivity that leads to death, then shouldn't these less fit people do their duty and die before they procreate? Normally this wouldn't be a burden to the Progressives because the evil private insurance company would be saddled with the bill to work with people with compromised respiratory systems. But with ZeroCare and the requirement to have Death Panels in order to ration out "health" care, where in line do these people fit? Wouldn't the diesel engine, in their view, be the Jack Kevorkian that will lift up society by removing such inferior types?
We need to promote this religious schism in their worship.

This is the money paragraph. Variety of sources, like ... oh for instance: volcanos, forest fires, and other natural and manmade issues. They are taking an issue and generalizing and then demonizing. Not reporting this is manipulating people.
Animals use oxygen for metabolism and give off CO2 as a waste product.
Anyway, CO2 doesn't have anything to do with whats in the article.
A Variety is how many?
It’s more than two, usually indicates many,
so there are many sources, what percentage
of them did diesel represent? What could
be done to limit the remainder?
I know, too sensible.
“He told me in no uncertain terms that CARBs goal was to make sure that eventually NO Diesel engine would ever be allowed in California.”
Does anyone really think they would stop with diesels?
I think smoking out tailgaters and beating squids in ricers with my 500+ hp cummins is one of my best stress relievers.
Oooooohhhhhh Yeahhhhh......:o)
