Despite controversy, Beaverton expands Hispanic celebration (Zip for July 4th!)

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- The City of Beaverton has expanded the scope of a celebration that started out as a party for Mexico's Independence Day.

The city on Friday announced they were broadening the festival to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month for the "Year of the Bicentennial" in the Americas as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico all marking 200 years of independence over the month.

It was scheduled for September 16 at 6 p.m. at Beaverton's City Park.

Earlier this week, controversy erupted when radio commentator Lars Larson interviewed Beaverton City Commissioner Betty Bode to ask why the city was officially celebrating Mexican Independence Day, but had no official celebration for American Independence Day.

According to the U.S. Census, Beaverton is the most diverse city in the state. Twenty percent is "non-white," 16 percent is classified as Hispanic. Larson argued that fact did not necessarily mean of Mexican descent.

A request for the event was taken from the Mexican consulate, Bode said. Bode said the aim of the celebration was to allow people of Mexican heritage into closer ties with the community at large.

Beaverton's Mayor Denny Doyle was set to speak at the event, along with performances by a Mexican folk ballet, maricachi bands and food. The cost to put on the event was $6,000 The festival is free to attend.

But critics call it ridiculous, when the city doesn't even have a taxpayer-funded Fourth of July Celebration.

"It's completely inadequate, " said Larson, "It doesn't do the right thing and simply renames the wrong thing."

Larson had Beaverton City Councilwoman Betty Bode on his show Thursday, and asked her why the city would sponsor a foreign celebration and not an American one.

September 16 marks the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence movement from Spain and November 20 marks the 100th anniversary of the Mexican revolution.

Events in September will be taking place in Oregon (Independence, Woodburn, Portland, Eugene and Hillsboro) and around the country.

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates Hispanic heritage starting in 1968 after Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson. It was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

"It’s an honor to recognize events like these that are so special to many members of this community," Doyle said.

“yah...you don’t get much more politically tone deaf than the Mayor of Beanerton and most of City Council. He has a rather large Mexican National contingent over there and Hizzonor is obviously shopping for votes.”

LOL!

What would be funny to do is dress like the Leftist activists (by not bathing or washing your hair for a couple of weeks) and make signs that would be in favor of the illegals. The posters could say “Aztlan uber alles!”, “Mexican criminals for illegal immigration now!” or show a pic of the new USA and Mexico border where CA, AZ, NM, TX, and CO are part Mexico. Make the posters show the obvious agenda the Left (in Beaverton and elsewhere) has for destroying us.

to somehow try and make illegals more acceptable to the American public at large

No. The idea is to soften up the Americans for de facto Mexican rule.

The Mexican "government" regards Americans as weakling children to be subjugated. Unlike their ancestors, who gave no quarter to the Beeg Men of Mexico, this generation is soft and easily defeated, if not by military power, then by immivasion and cultural submission.

The war is going well for them. Dissipated garbage like Betty Bode will bury her nose in their butts and thank them for it.

Once you do that, they know you're done.

Ever think you would see a Mexican President in the American Congress lambasting a sovereign American state?

Now you have. And they know they won a battle in the war.

Hispanic surge is reshaping Oregon

Snip: The differences are starkest in the Portland area. Four of the metro area's five counties -- Yamhill, Clackamas, Washington and Columbia -- had a negative growth rate among non-Hispanic whites younger than 20. The equivalent Hispanic population in those counties had high growth rates. Clackamas County, for instance, had almost 10,000 fewer white children in 2008 than in 2000, while Hispanic youths grew by 61 percent.

Demographic Profile of Hispanics in Washington, 2008

Very interesting, thanks.

“The growth of Hispanics in Oregon — especially the current and expected future growth among children — will shape the state’s political scene, experts say. “

There’s an understatement!

Thanx. Best I've seen. Sent to my personal e-mail list with this note.

In case you support boycotts of Arizona and wonder what that racist state is doing to those poor illegal alines, please spend a few minutes for another view; a view not usually in the major US media.

Best video I’ve seen on the issue.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsH8xvjTAlo

Eric Holder and Obama have decided to sue the state of Arizona and Sheriff Arpaio of Mira Copa county for enforcing the laws against illegal immigration. Phoenix, in Mira Copa county has the third highest kidnapping rate of any large city in the world. Human and drug trafficking are rampant. Part of two parks south of Tucson are closed with signs posted warning people to keep out. The parks are used for human and drug smuggling.

A ranch in Texas was taken over by a Mexican cartel, by force. A well-know rancher in Arizona was killed by two guys who came across the border and went back after the murder. A sheriff and the deputies in two other counties have contracts on their heads from Mexican drug cartels.

A hundred years ago the US army was sent to the border to stop one rebel leader from committing raids into the US. The current situation is far worse and dangerous to US citizens. The president took and oath to protect us, as did our governors and sheriffs. So what is Obama doing? Has the federal government made any statements in protection of the cops? Have they done anything to help. Yes, 1200 more border patrol for the long border from San Diego to Brownsville.

Unbelievably, Obama is now suing the state of Arizona and investigating Arpaio in a 6 month long witch hunt. Instead of enforcing the federal law and protecting US citizens, as he swore to do, Instead of standing up publically for the sheriff and deputies who have been threatened, Obama ignores those threats and is going after the people who are doing what he refuses to do.

This is not about immigration. It is about ILLEGAL immigration, public safety, control of our lands, and our national defense. Something our president doesn’t seem to give a damn about.

Yes I’m angry. The questios is why isn’t there a national uproar. What would you do if your state was suffering through this and being attacked by the president?

If you believe in this issue, contact your representatives in the WH and support Arizona in any way you can. Thanx for reading.

Very interesting, thanks.

About a decade ago I worked in the Portland area and had errands in the Hillsboro area. Even back then some of the main roads looked more like a barrio than the community it used to be.

So can Oregonians feel free to hike in our back lands on that day without encountering....

Well AuntB you know the rest of that statement.

Black Tar off of I-5 and heavily armed illegals protecting the “Crops” in OUR forrest lands.

And I thought Chantrell mushroom hunting season used to be dangerous.

The Cartels are here.

“The Cartels are here.”

You’re dang straight they are!!!

Do you remember the BBQ place on TV highway...I’m having a hard time recalling the name right now.

Anyway, the property on which his BBQ place was located was seized because of a bust of 35 - 40 cartel members. He had to relocate because of this bust, and he doesn’t seem to be welcome in his new John’s Landing digs. Something about the smoke...

What a great BBQ place! Either you called in your order an hour ahead of the time you wanted to eat, or you waited an hour after ordering to get your meal.

It was THAT good!

Eugene has had a "Fiesta Latina" for years, usually over the weekend closest to May 5 - but it is the organizers put it on with voluntarily donated funds. Sometimes it is fun, sometimes the leftist activists hold sway and it becomes just a political thing - it just depends on the mood at the time.

The big city sponsored event, the Eugene Celebration in early fall, is always packed with leftist themes. It is a shame they dropped the old Emerald Empire Roundup in favor of that.

4th of July, the city does nothing - but there are always several privately sponsored events, usually including one or two put on by the America hating leftists. Fine as long as they pay their own way I reckon.

Coming to SE NM we missed 4th of July by a couple days, but I understand they put on a really big thing in Roswell (with a UFO / space alien sub theme of course). We're about 40% Hispanic here, but the difference is most Hispanics work and pay taxes just like everyone else, in the same industries as everyone else - so Hispanics are very integrated.

The county I live in is one of the most majority Republican counties in the US. Even more Republican than Oklahoma. It is unfortunate that Albuquerque and Santa Fe control the state, but this year we are working towards a significant red shift!

The Coast Range is a great place to grow weed and there have been those guarded plantations scattered about for generations. The cartels are another thing and most of the increased activity is opportunists who have arrived to fill the gap in domestic meth production, and probably a number of them producing both weed and meth. It is a direct effect of the recent state law banning OTC sales of Sudafed and the like. Up ‘til then, users made their own stuff in their kitchens and they were mostly non violent, despite their ghastly appearance. The unintended consequence of prohibition is this whole new ball game.

Yeah Yeah.

He was on the news not to far back with his “new” nieghbors complaining.

That is in the Portland area right?

What is even more “dumb” is people moving out to rural areas next to “ranches” and complaining about the smell of cow manure. Duh or Doyuh. : )

We live half a mile from a camp site/boat launch and I love the smell of campfires, so comforting and reminds me of when I first came up here looking for property when we lived in the camp sites during the week and hotels on the week ends for a month or so.

KV of course “hated roughing it” and to this day will not even day camp unless he has his other “careprovider/comrad” with us to wheel him around on adventures not associate with Mom/me/careprovider (can’t blame him there).

Lincoln County SDistrict had to make budget cuts and they chopped off the hispanic to english for primary grades.

Kudo’s for that choice. Could of been something more mainstream that got chopped off like something in the Spec. Ed (for the severly physically disabled).
