Jerry Brown says he'd be a frugal governor
Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer
September 3, 2010 07:33 PM

(09-03) 19:33 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Jerry Brown said Friday that if elected governor he would have to "do things that labor doesn't like," including cutting pension benefits for public employees and asking labor leaders to "put everything on the table" to get California's bloated budget under control.

"If you're looking for frugality, I'm your man," the California attorney general and former two-term governor said in a meeting with The Chronicle's editorial board. When he was governor from 1975 to 1983, he said, "I vetoed the pay raises for the state employees not once, but twice. I was overridden by 23 Republican votes.

"I called for the two-tier pension system in 1982," added Brown, 72. "Of course, the next four governors didn't do anything. I'm willing to get in the battle."

If California is stupid enough to elect Jerry Brown AGAIN, there is absolutely no hope for the place.

Frugal? A radical DemoRat in Taxifornia with a rap sheet so long you can’t find the end of it....frugal? Yeah, Gray Davis was frugal too, just like Professor Moonbeam’s father, Patrick. All good tax and spend Rats. Look at the trail of disaster they left us with. Not one of them ever fought for a balanced budget....the last one of those occurred during Governor Deukmejian’s (true conservative Republican) reign in the early seventies. I remember it well. They fought over how to return taxation surpluses to the taxpayers of California. Can you imagine???

He really does look older than 72.

For a moonbeam he sure was left out in the sun.

"If you're looking for frugality, I'm your man,"

I actually believe this. He showed great efficiency in using Linda ronstadt for his "beard," while she did ythe same with him. Instead of a foursome with two "beards," thgey accomplished the illusion with each other. That, in Democrat-Thought, is a saving of 50%.

He’s the idiot who allowed state employees to unionize.

It was illegal before him.

He’s directly responsible for the economic disaster that faces California today.

Frugal? If I recall correctly, unionization of State of California employees occurred during his last administration. That is one of the many reasons CA has such an out of whack budget and overpaid state workers.

Well of course he’ll cut public pensions. He’ll have no choice. California is already bankrupt. There is no more blood to be squeezed from the stone.

Doing the right thing when you’re backed into a corner and trapped like a rat isn’t a mark of good character.

Off a little bit.

1983–1991...

Even though those days seem like another lifetime ago...

“If you’re looking for frugality, I’m your man,”

After squandering the Reagan surplus, Moonbeam has a lot of nerve.

It is unfortunate that Proposition 140 doesn’t apply to those who served as Governor before the law passed.

Fine for him to want to cut pensions since he’s already double dipping.
