Democrats fight to stay in office amid backlash

McGREGOR, Texas – Rep. Chet Edwards, an imperiled Democrat deep in the heart of Republican territory, finds exiting American Legion Post No. 273 slow going. Supporters and well-wishers keep stopping him.

As the campaign becomes increasingly toxic for Democrats, none of it may matter.
Some of the most senior Democrats in conservative districts are facing what could be their most difficult races: Missouri's 17-term Rep. Ike Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and South Carolina's 14-term Rep. John Spratt, chairman of the House Budget Committee.
Even Democrats who, like Edwards, voted against the health care and climate change bills are locked in tough races because they are being linked to Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Georgia Rep. Jim Marshall and South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin join Edwards on the list.
"Jim Marshall's days are numbered because of his continued support of Nancy Pelosi and her agenda of backroom deals, hocus-pocus economics and massive government spending," Marshall's opponent, former Georgia legislator Austin Scott, wrote on his website.
Directly in GOP crosshairs are roughly four dozen Democrats in districts that McCain won in 2008. That's one part of any GOP calculation to reclaiming the House.
Edwards, like other vulnerable Democrats, has distanced himself from Obama and Pelosi on several votes, including repeal of the "don't ask/don't tell" policy on gays in the military.

These are just two examples of practically life time politicians who feel entitled & act like we work for them, instead of them working for us & our country.
That goes for both democrats & republicans like John McCain.
I'd honestly rather see AZ vote for a democrat who is more conservative than McCain - if there are actually any left in this world.
The sewer in Washinton needs to be flushed out & new people need to be running our government. We don't need term limits - we need smarter voters.

I agree!!! There is no such thing as a good, loyal, American patriot, honest Democrat. The Democrat Party and POTUS Barack (I hate America) Hussein Obama need to be destroyed at the voting booth on Election Day, November 2, 2010. I urge “all” Americans to get out to vote on election day to totally destroy all Democrat candidates running for public office. Folks, Remember November!!!!
Most of them in D.C. haven't either. They have no concept of how real Americans live. We need real people who understand everyday living problems that these guys have no clue about.
Voters are going to have to wake up & clean house.

I spent over four days with Ike Skelton some years back and watched him put on the folksy, friendly face for the good folks back home. It was a thing to behold and is certainly the reason he keeps getting reelected. After that performance, no one looks at his voting record, they are convinced that he is looking out for them. He’s just a down home Emmanuel Cleaver.
There are no “independent” or “conservative” Rats..they are all helping to move forward the leftist agenda and need to be thrown out of office. No mercy, they just are cowards that won’t admit they are tools of Reid, Pelosi and Obama.

It is amazing to me that Chet Edwards continues to be re-elected in what on a map appears to be one of the most conservative parts of the state. If he wants his job, he should consider switching parties to keep his “conservative” credentials.
Good news - I saw a poll where Flores is leading Edwards 53-41%. Sad that it is that close as McLame even got 67% of the vote.
