French bid to ban veils worries allies, tourists

Protests in Pakistan, al-Qaida warnings, skittish Muslim tourists: France's plan to do away with burqa-style veils is already reverberating far beyond its borders.

A bill to outlaw face veils, aimed at upholding French republican values, is expected to win Senate approval this month. If it passes this key hurdle, French diplomats will face a tough task ensuring the ban doesn't alienate governments, deter devout foreign shoppers loaded with cash, or provoke Islamist terrorists.

It's a complex challenge for a country that works relentlessly to preserve its global diplomatic influence, its cherished secular ideals, and its status as the world's top tourist destination.

Ensuring gender equality, woman's dignity and security are the official reasons France wants to outlaw Islamic veils, most often worn as "niqabs" that hide all but the eyes. Authorities insist the global ban - which would include visiting foreigners - is not anti-Muslim.

But that message has failed to convince some governments, be they Western or France's traditional Arab allies, or trickle down to moneyed travelers who swarm Paris' so-called Golden Triangle, a high-priced shopping district centered around the Champs-Elysees.

That some other European countries like Belgium are considering similar legislation - and Muslim countries like Syria and Egypt have instituted their own limited bans on face veils - may help bolster the French argument, but not win the debate

But I don't hear rioting and protests when Syria and Egypt have such bans...wonder why?

That’s exactly what Sarkozy should say to any Arab gov’t throwing a hissy fit. If Syria and Egypt can ban those hideous garments, so can we.

The other point I hope he brings up is to tell them to STFU about presuming to lecture him and the country of France about religious tolerance when Christians in most of those countries are seriously persecuted.

AP - the voice of thoughtless libs.

Who gives a smelly Obama about what they think - or write?

Bravo France, keep it up. You’re finally showing some cojones against the muznuts.

I say Bravo too!this is one time they got it right..Anyone who wants to wear a mask all day every day should go back to their home land and do as they please not in other countries where they are making rules for what they want to do..

Now the USA should do the same..I don’t see that happening until we get rid of the Muslim and his fools..Then we can get rid of any Muslim that do not want to go by our laws..

Come on Tamar1973,
Aren’t you in favor of keeping the female down?
Barefoot and preggers and in the kitchen bakeing pies?
Dressed in omar the tent makers garb when they go out in public?
Uneducated and subserviant?

Pretty stupid huh?

The enforcement of this law will be interesting. I think some cars will burn over this.

“...skittish Muslim tourists...”

Less Muslims on planes. So, what’s the downside of that?

“French bid to ban veils worries allies, tourists.”

####

Allies:

Which “allies”? Islamic scum in backward, pre-medievel Jihad land, or fellow secular cowards in self-hating, EuroSocialist land.

Tourists:

Well this potential European tourist is MUCH more likely to visit a country that is going to defend its culture, laws and traditions aganinst a primitive hate cult, and is finally reasserting its pride in the major role it played in shaping western civilization

Gosh, it would be horrible to alienate the Arab KKK.

Seems to me that turnabout is fair play. You can’t enter SA, the cradle of evil, without a woman covering up.

At this point, I think the French are on the verge of starting another “Terror” of their own.

At this point I think the French diplomats don’t care a fig about the Arab governments.

I don’t think so. The French are fanatically tolerant, but the Muzzies have been going too far. With the recession they are still mooching off of the French and so many are fed up with their wrecking the nation with their colonizing.
