Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced Tuesday he is retiring, in a stunning move that may prompt a White House reshuffle as President Barack Obama's top aide has expressed interest in the post. "It just feels right," 68-year-old Daley told a press conference as he announced the decision to not seek a seventh term as mayor after nearly 22 years on the job.
In Washington, Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who in April said he would one day like to run for the top post in his hometown, said Daley's decision "surprised me."
"While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision not to run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago," Emanuel said.
Obama -- who cut his political teeth in Chicago and was a US senator from the state of Illinois -- also weighed in, releasing a statement that described how "no mayor in America has loved a city more or served a community with greater passion."
The departing mayor "helped build Chicago's image as a world class city, and leaves a legacy of progress that will be appreciated for generations to come," Obama said.

While Rahm has established that he’s the most incompetent public official ever to have repeatedly failed upwards it may be in the public’s interest for Chicago to have him as Mayor. Chicago’s loss would be the Nation’s gain.
I think Rahm wants out before he becomes a fall guy for the disaster this administration has turned into. Plus he was the lead strategist in taking the House back, but that strategy had one glaring weakness which has now come back to haunt them: Blue Dogs.
I think it was Truman who said: Given the choice between a republican and a Republican, voters will choose a Republican every time.
My theory is that it is an excuse to stop some old DOJ case from going on.
Holder has stalled it as long as he could.

Daley openly indicated long ago that if Chicago was not selected for the Olympics, he was not interested in running again. Despite the highest sales tax rate in the nation, his city, like so many others, is going broke. He apparently wants someone else to bear the legacy of Chicago’s bankruptcy.
