Los Angeles police who confronted and fatally shot an apparently drunk man with a knife who was threatening a pregnant woman and her child is a hero, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa asserted Wednesday.
The mayor also defended police Chief Charlie Beck, who was shouted down at a community meeting meant to calm residents in the neighborhood where the officer-involved shooting occurred Sunday afternoon near MacArthur Park.
Protesters have taken to the streets in anger three nights in a row setting fires, dumping garbage and throwing rocks and bottles at police since an LAPD bicycle patrol officer shot and killed Manuel Jamines, 37, for threatening people with a knife and refusing orders to drop his weapon.
Critics said Jamines was drunk but not dangerous, and authorities should have used less-than-lethal force to restrain him.
Beck sought to calm residents during a community meeting last night, but members of the crowd heckled and booed him. Some yelled "Killers! Assassins!''
"I think those kinds of accusations are not only outrageous, they shouldn't be repeated,'' Villaraigosa said.

LA riots . . . again.
right
Rioting and Looting = Hoodlum Olympics.
Sorry, but this was probably another abuse of force. Can’t tell for sure with the information provided, but am becoming much less automatically pro police with the high incidence of abuse. I’m sure that they can claim that they had no tasers, or other non-lethal weapons (because we taxpayers refuse to provide enough money to support them).
I remain skeptical though (especially with the other excessive force used by the “break and enter” forces - and shooting innocent people...
Yes, for those pro law enforcement fellows, I use to be like you but am fast becoming anti-police and anti-government. Seems that corruption starts at the top and has been leaking downward for years now...
He might try adding a few more Spanish surnames on, everybody votes for family!
Color me surprised... I didn’t expect this out of Mayor Vivalaraza.
Where’s Joe Friday? He would be very disappointed at LA today.
Not if you’re a Marxist (RCP) freak. Probably the word used was “asesinos,” which means “killers” and not specifically assassins.
However, I think this “riot” should be heavily investigated, because this practice of white radical leftist or anarchist groups coming into an ethnic area and stirring up a riot based on some incident is becoming all too common.
The radical leftist groups did the same thing in Oakland a couple of months ago with the riots after the judgment on that police officer who shot a guy at the BART station. When you look at the photos you see some blacks - and lots of lank-haired white kids with bandannas tied around their faces. This included the looters.
My eyes won’t stop rapidly blinking after seeing that headline.
He wouldn't even recognize it today. Joe Friday would probably break down and weep seeing what LA is like today. It is sad watching shows like Dragnet, Adam-12 and others from the 1960's and 1970's today and seeing what Los Angeles used to be like, when it was actually an American city.
I just saw an episode of Dragnet on our local Re-run station which featured MacArthur Park. It looked alot more peaceful and friendly back then. Now no American would dare show up there unless they had M-16's.
I’m waiting for General Petraeus to call the city and tell them to stop taking police action against drunk illegals, because it might inflame mexicans in Mexico and in our country and endanger our troops if we ever deploy any to defend our borders.
Oh, please, there are proper times for that charge, this isn't one of them. The protesters don't CARE if the perp was innocent or guilty...he was 'guatemalan'...the only thing that matters.
You “may” be right... If you go by news reports, things are specified in a way that biases the news. Now this may not be one of those times (I don’t know), but today, there are many abuses of police force that are reported.
I do know that there are either many more instances of police brutality and excessive force or may it’s just that the 24 hour news cycle is catching up... You can believe whichever you wish...
At least stop the nonsensical break and enter and then shoot anyone that seems to be a threat (even dogs). After all, drug users are rarely threats (and they would know in advance if they were major dealers).
Take this minor stuff with the continuing action of our local “best” that want to insure revenue at the risk of higher crime. These things all do even out eventually..
“At least stop the nonsensical break and enter and then shoot anyone that seems to be a threat (even dogs).”
Agreed, however that scenario has nothing to do with this case.
Okay, agree that this is probably not one of those instances. Still, would only call these folks to get my insurance validated... :^) (and while I lived in Maryland 8 years, wouldn’t call them at all...)
Nope.
Threaten an armed citizen with a knife, take a bullet. Doesn’t matter if the armed citizen is private individual or a cop. Either way, its good riddance to bad rubbish. The only thing that bothers me is that subjects of the PRK don’t have that option - only cops.
Now if they’d just take some machine guns to the rioters.
Sorry, you seem to think that that police are always justified in their actions... My guess is that you have not had an encounter to question that viewpoint.
That’s okay, I also had your viewpoint for many years... it just takes real world experience to change things. Keep your optimistic views as long as you can - it helps.
Oh no, too fast. The ISraelis know how to do it right ... Ruger 1022, fully suppressed, excellent optics, shots made to delicate portions of the lower body, to leave lasting impressions. Yea, machinegunning the scum is just more cleanup work for the Israeli janitorial staff. [BTW, did you knwo that the most painful place to be shot is in the bladder area?]
