IMO this test should be brought back and not only for 8th graders, but should be mandatory for anyone to pass prior to being registered to vote!
Nevertheless, this definitely answers the question why so many of our children are clueless, and so many of us seasoned citizens actually do have a functioning knowledge of how our govt is supposed to work.
If the test graders were honest than perhaps I could go with this, but you know for sure that the Democrats would all pass and somehow all the Republicans would fail. They would rig the test just like they rig the elections. I am surprised that some don’t see this. I know that many of you are big time government folks and trust them 100 percent but I sure don’t. Yell “Everyone take a test to vote” and you will see what happens when the government gives these tests! (I am not referring to you but just in general). I KNOW YOU ARE NOT A BIG TIME GOVERNMENT TYPE!!!! I KNOW THAT 100 PERCENT!!!!
We all have NO problem understanding No. 80.....but, that’s our common sense, which is forbidden in today’s court system. Otherwise, Tort-lotto would not be in existence as it is today. It’s ALWAYS somebody else’s fault, as long as they have $$$$ to grab.
When I was in school we took the test in the 8th grade in order to move on to HS. We then had to take a similar, but tougher, test when we were seniors in order to graduate. No pass on either test you failed that grade, whether it was 8th grade or 12th. Back in the good old days when you actually had to learn what was taught and you never learned how to use a condom in school!

They are or "were" less detailed. My wife took one years ago to get her citizenship. The questions were very basic: "What are the branches of government?; How many senators does each state have?; etc." The examiner, a judge, could tell that she knew it well but went through the motions anyway. He finally got to the question "Who was president during the Civil War?". She grinned at him and replied, "Jefferson Davis". He laughed and said, "You pass."
I wonder if they have that sense of humor these days.

I would’ve done as well on that test as I would’ve hoped.
I couldn’t name everyone or all the cabinets.
I think I would’ve done well when I had my civics/government/social studies class in High School or maybe 8th grade. I think that I’d pass now, but not do as well as if I’d been studying it.

I’ve always found these types of articles pointless. Of course, I could have passed the test. Given the information and time to study. When I was in 8th grade, for one of our Social Studies tests, we had to list the presidents (40 at the time) in order, their years in office, party, home State, and major event during their term. Could I do it now? Of course not. Did I do it then? 100%.
How terrible . It must have hurt a lot of peoples feelings. </Sarcasm>
Today they all pass even if they cannot read after the 12th grade. Some FB and BB players are millionaires and cannot find their name in the phone book.
You should try reading a letter by John Hancock written in 18th century english. Words used like thence, and thither, where the s's look like f's. Perhaps you need an interpreter.

Congratulations on your wife’s citizenship. Becoming an American is a wonderful thing. That is what makes the illegal immigration so bad. Loving Americans like your wife who worked for her citizenship should be celebrated.
Exactly, Dr. Sivana! And believe it or not, it is still the state standard in my state that middle-schoolers must know all amendments as well as Bill of Rights, et. al.
My sixth graders wrote essays about the BOR.
