UPS and Homeland Security
Me Self | 5 Mins Ago | JessDuntno

Posted on 09/14/2010 4:26:12 PM PDT by jessduntno

I own a small business. About two hours ago, a woman came through the door marked NO ADMITTANCE EMPLOYEES ONLY and started talking to one of the guys, asking questions about the business. He tried to point out to her that she had just walked through a door that was pretty clearly marked as for employees only and she waved that off and produced a business card that said she was a UPS Representative. The guy said, so does that mean you work here?

Some of our guys have an attitude, you see. I don't know where they get it, it's a warehouse and they are guys, so I let it go, even though I am always perfectly civil.

Anyway, she starts to explain that she is here by request of Homeland Security and is doing a checkup on our business because we do a lot of shipping. The guy calls me and says I should come downstairs.

Just as I am coming down the stairs, I hear her saying that if we don't fill out the forms that she is waving around, we could have our shipping interrupted as soon as tomorrow. I stepped in and told her I would take care of it, leave the forms with me. She said no, she would wait until I filled them out. I told her that would be right around the time that hell froze over. OK, that was not perfectly civil, but I don't like it when people are abusing me and my right to privacy.

See, I said, you don't walk, unannounced, into MY company and tell me I might be out of business the following day without notice and without explanation and your only authority for this is that you have a UPS business card ... and that she would have to leave.

I called my UPS Agent and she said that yes, there was some "auditing" of businesses going on, but that it was not necessary to fill out the forms, it was a cooperative effort they were engaged in with DHS. The woman was just trying to do her job, but no, it didn't have to be filled out on the spot and no, she had no authority or reason to say our shipping would be interrupted. She was embarrassed, I think.

I told her thanks and hung up the phone.

I guess I am wondering two things;

1. Anybody else get this? 2. WTF?

I don’t blame you .. that’s outrageous!

And just because she shows a UPS card, without
seeing an ID, she could’ve been anybody.

Do you ship hazardous materials ?

“that’s baloney!!”

That’s what I thought, but UPS verified it.

“Do you ship hazardous materials ?”

Never. Once in a blue moon, we used to ship a dry ice packet, but we haven’t done that for years.

This could drive a few more customers to FedEx.

LOL—if that woman had walked into any of the warehouses where I have worked in my life, we’d have had her shrink-wrapped and in the dumpster in no time.

“Sounds like the census takers have new jobs.”

It’s freaking me out. The UPS people and Homeland Security asking questions? We’ve had a daily pickup account with them for 11-12 years.

Sounds like DHS is getting UPS to do stuff that DHS would otherwise need a warrant for. DHS probably thinks that people will voluntarily cooperate with UPS, since people ‘trust’ them.

Almost makes you wonder what kind of info UPS collects, keeps, and shares with others....

Gee, I thought she was going scoping your business out to rob you in the traditional sense.

Should have told her to beat it and that FedEx is looking for new business everyday.

UPS is a union shop.

Use FedEx.

Typically cheaper and faster.

Time to get the shipping rates for FedEx.

Even a couple of days of not having any packages from a regular shipper might get this kicked higher up and get the troublemaker's actions reviewed by someone in UPS management.

Like I said, I’m the most civil bstrd here. And I stepped in.

So what kind of stuff are the forms asking for?

Yep. That’s why we have the signs up - we throw them out all day long - but this one was legit.

Call your UPS rep back, and see how bad they want to retain your business... I wouldn’t settle for anything less than the person that was there representing UPS to show up with the Rep and apologize for what took place.

This sounds like the fingerprint scenario ...

Since govt’s want to force us to submit fingerprints or DNA samples they can’t come out and do it easily. So the first phase, fingerprints, has been accomplish by the intrusive banks doing it to customers. The govts could have prohibited that practice by certain banks but no, rather they let those banks take the customer heat and ‘condition’ folks into providing their fingerprints upon demand.

Again here: coerce private business into doing the govt’s dirty work.
