New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday backed the controversial firing of a transit worker who burned pages of the Koran outside a planned mosque near Ground Zero.
NJTransit fired assistant train coordinator Derek Fenton Monday, just two days after he ripped pages from the Koran and torched them with a lighter on the ninth anniversary of 9/11.
"We're supportive of the action taken by NJTransit," Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak told the Daily News.
But one New Jersey state senator defended Fenton's constitutional right to free speech and criticized his firing.
Fenton was not in uniform and apparently not on the clock when he staged his protest in front of news photographers and reporters covering demonstrations marking the anniversary of the World Trade Center attack.
"So long as his actions, however misguided, took place on his own time, and he was not acting in his capacity as a representative of NJTransit but as an American exercising his constitutional rights, then the agency is clearly in the wrong," Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union) said in a statement.
Some Fenton backers created a "Help Derek Fenton" Facebook page, devoted to finding a new job for the father of two.
Notice how he was brought in for questioning while for decades the progressives have been burning American Flags with impunity. I disagree with Christie on this one, Fenton should not have been fired.
Christie is wrong on this.

CAIR loves Gov. Christie
The N.J. chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations “today thanked New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for cautioning the GOP against using the controversy over a Manhattan Islamic community center to paint ‘all of Islam’ with the brush of terrorism,” the group says in a statement, which urges people to “send a note of thanks.”
Christie also rapped President Obama for playing politics with his speech, but the release doesn’t mention that.

In my opinion, his stanch on islam comes before the economy, immigration, health care, or any other issue. He lost me. I want someone to stand up and say islam is evil and will destroy America. I wish Geert Wilders could run for president here.
How about churches desecrated with condoms during mass?
Christie just keeps going downhill fast.
What transit system personnel policies did he violate, I wonder. I haven’t seen that in any news reports. You gotta break some kinda rule to get fired, right? Otherwise, it’s just whim....
$2 says they thought he was smoking a cigarette.
I imagine he’s gonna be pretty wealthy after his wrongful termination suit.
ACLU? ACLU? Bueller? Bueller?
I don’t see a quote from Christie in the article.
Obama has officially brought in Cristie onto his trade panel. And, Christie has softened some of his stances on breaking up pensions in NJ.
I think that someone in the Obama Administration has threatened Cristie’s family.
As far as the guy who was fired from NJ transit... He is now on multiple watch lists by DHS, and the Justice Department and the NY prosecuters office are looking for something to charge him with.
If this guy had been in uniform, or on the clock I could see his termination, but for simply exercising his first amendment rights....no way.
“A case tailor made for the ACLU.”
> crickets <
You couldn’t be more wrong on this one Governor!
NJ Transit said Fenton was fired but wouldn’t give specifics.
“Mr. Fenton’s public actions violated New Jersey Transit’s code of ethics,” an agency statement said.
“NJ Transit concluded that Mr. Fenton violated his trust as a state employee and therefore [he] was dismissed.”
Why didn’t Christie just shut up about it?
FENTON LOOKS LIKE A HERO FROM HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Christie is wrong on a whole host of things, aside from fisacl issues.
He opposes the second Amendment, and supports illegal aliens.
He thinks that its fine for the Mosque to be built on the 9-11 site as its a “local matter”. He backed Castle for Senate in Delaware, a man who voted for cap and trade, the Obama stimulus plan, and to investigate Bush II for impeachment over the Iraqi War.
This is the way Christie thinks on social issues.
No wonder Ed Koch loves him.
