(NECN: Tom Langford, Cambridge, Mass.) - Normally NECN does not cover suicides, but in this case we are... because of the profound effect that this is very public action is having on the campus of Harvard University. Student Sean Bender said, "You can tell there's a different atmosphere today.

Everyone is a little more sober." The question "why" is on the minds of many at Harvard University after an unidentified man came to campus, stood on the steps of Memorial Church, and shot himself in front of an area full of people.

Bender said, "It's really sad they had to come here and do it. It seems to be a stunt for attention or a desperate act." Student Jon Van den Akker said, "We've been having discussions about philosophy, theology, and sociology and trying to make sense of why someone might come here and shoot themselves."

That’s a good way to go. I’ve been thinking myself of a suitable venue.

We used to shout "Go to State!" at visitors to University of Michigan, and some administrators thought that was harsh.

Maybe he was just sad to see how far Harvard has fallen from its orignal Christian roots.

“They”? Hey Harvard, it’s “he” came here to do it. Don’t they teach you anything at Harvard?

How do you like them apples?

Suicide is the ultimate selfish act.

It’s playing God.

And this person chose to harm others even more than the usual perpetrator of self-murder does.

One thing’s for sure though. One way or another, he now knows beyond doubt that he is not God.

I’ve been thinking myself of a suitable venue.

I'm gonna end it all on the pitcher's mound shortly after the Mariners win the World Series.

Yep. I'm gonna live forever.

"...We've been having discussions about philosophy, theology, and sociology and trying to make sense of why someone might come here and shoot themselves..."

Unbelievable. Skulls full of mush. Young college students are some of the biggest idiots there are, and it is compounded by their arrogant conceit resulting from their discovery that there is stuff out there they didn't already know, but now they do since they go to college.

I know, I was there. Bah. Discussions of philosophy and sociology indeed. A guy just shot himself, and all they can think of is themselves and the effect it will have on them.

Unbelievable.

Yeah, how about that? Actually, it’s best to just disappear. Like D.B. Cooper.

Michelle went to Harvard and I've heard her say "Me and Barack."

As for the "It seems to be a stunt for attention or a desperate act," really? What was her first clue?

“””Greg Epstein, humanist chaplain at Harvard, who stationed himself on the steps of Memorial Church and made himself available to talk to anyone who wanted to..”””

It is a brave new world when it appears Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist, or Catholic chaplains are no longer located at Harvard.

What is a humanist chaplain?
