WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Conservative voters chose the No. 3 Republican in the House of Representatives, Mike Pence, as their top choice for president for 2012 in a straw poll on Saturday.

The nonbinding opinion vote among 723 social conservatives attending what organizers called the "Values Voters Summit" put former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in second place for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, with 22 percent of the vote, compared with Pence's 24 percent.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin placed fifth, with 7 percent of the vote. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney placed third, with 13 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fourth, with 10 percent.

...

"What a dream ticket -- Mike Pence and Sarah Palin. That would give the liberals heartburn," said Tony Perkins, the Family Research Council's president.

...

About 2,000 people attended the convention in Washington.

Speakers included Christine O'Donnell, who won the Republican nomination for senate in Delaware on Tuesday with backing from the "Tea Party" movement.

I don’t know what these straw polls mean, if anything, but on 09/12/2009 he was walking around in the crowd talking to the folks. He is one of us and I will support him. He was busy talking to someone else so we just thumbs up to each other and he doesnt know me from Adam.

How in the world does Mittens Romney end up ahead of Sarah Palin with these so-called “social Conservatives”?

Romney was pro-choice as recently as 2002, then flip-flopped sometime before the ‘08 POTUS campaign. SP has always been pro-life.

Can someone explain this to me?

Sarah was second choice for those who voted for Pence and Huckabee.

I love Sarah, but Pence would be a dream come true.

It seems that values voters value candidates that remain outside the tabloid realm.

Look, Mister Smarty Pants, it isn’t funny naming REAL towns, when we’re dealing with political fantasies; that makes it, ipso facto, Washington, District of Commmunityorganizers.

I hope we do nominate someone like Pence (or Pence himself!). A good, stolid mid-westerner for crying out loud.

That is what we need.

Somebody BORING & SENSIBLE!

I have yet to find a ‘perfect’ conservative candidate.. but he does sift down mighty fine. ;-)

Pence McClintock ‘12

Sarah for Secy of State. She has that magnetic quality about her. The media are stuck to her.

Bachmann for Secy of Defense. I don’t know if she can gut a deer or clean a goose or duck in 30 seconds, but.. she comes from my ol’ neck of the woods.

oh, huhhh, was I dreaming online again? :-}
