WASHINGTON — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and that he has firsthand knowledge of that — because they fix his house.
A moderate Republican, Powell urged his party on Sunday to support immigration generally because those who come from abroad are, in his words, "what's keeping this country's lifeblood moving forward."
Powell said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants because they do work that needs to get done.

Illegals are not required to be incorporated and pay all the associated fees (taxes) for the privilege. Illegals have no mandated insurance or unemployment compensation or “required” health care. This is why the American guy in the yellow pages running Handyman Services Inc charges you $50-75 just to come out, plus $50-60 per hour once he’s there. But, once you make the illegals legal, they must become employees of Handyman Services Inc and it is no longer possible to fix any problem at your house for under $200. Meanwhile, illegals, so I’m told, charge anywhere from $5/hr to $15/hour with no transportation fee.
So, Mr. Powell, stop the government from strangling small business with fees (taxes) and mandates and get rid of the minimum wage law and you’ll be able to fix your house just fine without resorting to illegals. Meanwhile, Mr. Powell, your poorly thought through and ill-informed position makes me sorry I ever wanted you to run for president. Please crawl back in your frickin’ hole and leave the American scene alone at last.

Americans work just as cheap. I hired unemployed Americans to add a room to my house. They did a fantastic job, and I paid them what they asked for. These same guys did other work for me, as well. Americans will do what they can to feed their families.
Powell is not a Republican. Rather, he is a shameless opportunist: He will align himself with whomever and whatever will give him something.
Having electrical, plumbing and other structural work performed by illegals is asking for trouble.
They are not licensed, bonded or available when the house burns or collapses.
Sad thing, many unqualified workers are hired by construction companies in mass produced, planned community developments where the flaws don’t show up until just after the warranties expire. Construction supervisors are not always bi-lingual.

My first thoughts also. I guess if a liberal (which Powell most certainly is) asks the resident status of a Mexican or other dark-skinned immigrant that's acceptible. But if law-enforcement asks that would be profiling.
I used to respect Powell. But that was before he revealed himself to be the liberal he obviously is.

We went to a new restaurant that just opened. Family staffed, family financed and family owned. The prices were about 15% - 20% lower than comparable entrees in the area. I was cringing about what would come out. When it arrived, the food was fresh, well prepared and ample servings.
I hope they make it. It is modest in scale, but impressive example of bootstrapping in these times.
We go to great lengths here in San Diego to make sure all the work done on our property is by US Citizens. We have a lot of un/under employed neighbor who have lost work and jobs to illegals who work cheap, don’t pay taxes or SS and rob jobs from them. Just talk to any small contractor or businessman.
We also hire from a local University for help with cleaning, painting and garden clean up.
Hired a LEGAL citizen to do some work for me,price was right,work was good.
Translation: "what puts extra spending money in my pocket because I don't have to pay a market wage for home repairs."
(Also, usually blood moves in various directions. The only time your lifeblood moves in just one direction is when you're bleeding to death.)

30 years ago, a new section of condos was being built in Greenwood Village. Looked like mostly mezicans to me doin’ the work. The place is a joke crooked windows, door frames and jams at whacky angles. These guys didn’t know the meaning of plumb and straight. And forget the old adage, “Measure twice, cut once.”
The construction site was raided, and just about everybody took off. The caught somethin’ like 80 illegals! Building inspectors musta been paid off!
Hey Powell... I'm a black contractor who's seen his income cut to near poverty levels by the influx of cheap illegal labor.
How 'bout you explain to me how that's a good thing for my family? I've been doing the "work that needs to get done" all my working life.
