You don't often hear a U.S. president, past or present, talking about his mistakes and shortcomings in office. But that's what you will hear now - from the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter.
It turns out that during his four year term President Carter kept a diary that he is now publishing, along with an often-harsh critique of his own performance in the White House.
His tenure, which correspondent Lesley Stahl covered as a CBS White House correspondent, was tumultuous. The problems he confronted kept mounting and people wondered if he was cursed by a dismal economy, poor relations with Congress, and a nightmarish standoff over 52 Americans taken hostage by Iran.
After just one term he was trounced by Ronald Reagan.
Now Mr. Carter takes a look back at those years in excerpts from the diary he dictated into a tape recorder seven or eight times virtually every day he was president.

Jimmy Carter must be living on the same planet as Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Barney Frank, Barbara Boxer and Gvcernor Moonbeam, Jerry Brown.
Wish we could send them back to their planet along with the bozos who gave him the nobel peace prize.
He normalized relations with China; brokered a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, deregulated railroads, trucking, airlines and telephones; and his energy conservation programs resulted in a 50 percent cut in imported oil, down to just 4.3 million barrels a day.
Help me out if I am mistaken, but:
China was largely accomplished by Nixon.
Deregulation, including the air traffic controller's strike, was largely done by Reagan.
Reduction in oil use just may occur by pure chance /s if everyone is waiting in line every other day to pay prices that have gone thru the roof - and they are unemployed and have no money anyway.
As for the peace agreement, he did that. I cannot help but wonder how much it was offset by his spinelessness in dealing with the middle east regarding everything else.
OMG, we heard him on 60 Minutes (?) last night going on and on about how wonderful his presidency was. Disgusting.
Leslie Stahl interviewed Jimmuh? I bet THAT was a toughie for him!! Was significant time spent on his favorite color, food and how he met Rosalyn??
When did Jimmy Carter take up crack-smoking?
If you say so, Jimmy. Now go away.
You just keep telling yourself that, Jimmy.
Exacto! Iran, because of Carter’s abandonment and lack of resolve, is now one of the three primary exporters of islamic terror. And, what is even more: Carter’s continued love affair with all things Middle East (when he isn’t being promoted by his appalling wife into getting the Nobel Peace Prize -peace for whom?) is supported in the Carter center in Atlanta largely through finance from the Saudis. He spouts the Saudi line whenever and wherever he can.
Peanut-Boy can dream on.
He was a miserable failure. The economy, inflation, unemployment, gun control, the Iranian hostage crisis, and death of our military on a rescue mission in the desert.
He was almost as bad as Obama is now.
The man always was demented. Too late for redemption Jimmy.
Dont you just love the wigs Stahls been wearing over all these years?
One thing Carter has going for him is that anyone younger than 35 has no direct experience of how horrible he was.
From the movie, “Top Secret!”
Hillary Flammond: My uncle was born in America.
Nick Rivers: Oh, really?
Hillary Flammond: But he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape in a balloon during the Jimmy Carter presidency.
Don’t forget the wonderful gas lines. We lived about one mile from a station which seemed to be more reliable in obtaining supplies than others in the area. I could tell how good the line was if I could or could not see it from our windows.
;^)
Amelia Earhart: My circum-navigation of the globe was a success.
Joseph Hazelwood: My naptime was a success
Monica Lewinski: My internship was a success
Marcia Clark: My prosecution of OJ Simpson was a success
Everything after that was pure crap.
