RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia was moving forward Thursday with its first execution of a woman in nearly a century amid appeals from the European Union and repercussions that reached as far away as Iran.

Teresa Lewis, 41, was scheduled to die by injection at 9 p.m. at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt for the October 2002 hired killings of her husband and stepson. To procure the hit men, prosecutors said, she used sex, cash and a promised cut of the insurance benefits the killings would reap her.
The U.S. Supreme Court and Gov. Bob McDonnell declined to intervene. All her legal appeals have been exhausted, her attorney said.
In a state with the second busiest death chamber in the U.S., the Lewis execution has stirred an unusual amount of attention because of her gender, claims she lacked the intelligence to mastermind the killings and the post-conviction emergence of defense evidence that one of the triggermen manipulated her.

In a letter this month to McDonnell, the European Union asked the governor to commute her sentence to life, citing Lewis' mental capacity. Her lawyers have said testing shows Lewis is borderline mentally retarded.

Earlier this week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Western media of having a double standard in reporting on the Lewis execution.
He compared coverage of the Lewis case to the "heavy propaganda" campaign against the case of an Iranian woman who had been sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery.
"Meanwhile, nobody objects to the case of an American woman who is going to be executed," he was quoted as saying during a speech Monday to Islamic clerics and other figures in New York.

I want justice tonight. She deserves the same fate as her victims. Her death will be easy compared to the agony she caused her victims.

It makes no difference if the murderer is a male or female. There should be no difference in the penalty. Remember the left says that there is no difference between men and women?
Borderline mentally retarded. She had to intelligence and ability to plan and execute 2 murders for financial gain. Smart enough to plan it, smart enough to die for it. The EU and the rest of the ‘international community’ can stay out of the Commonwealth’s business.

I guess I just don’t get the people who say she shouldn’t be executed? She had enough smarts to find someone to do it for her and plan it all so therefore she’s smart enough to uderstad why she’s being executed. We wanted equal rights and here we have them.

They say her being retarded means she couldn't have "masterminded" this. I love the use of "mastermind" here as if you need to have much intelligence in order to hire a hitman to kill someone.
The European Union????!!!! Let's make a deal with the EU...they send us Polanski and that British punk who hacked a DoD computer and released thousands of pages of highly classified documents and we'll agree to keep this dame alive until the two have finished their sentences.

I am sick to death of the whiners who insist someone like this, who masterminded the murders of TWO human beings, deserves life in prison vs. the death to which her victims had no choice whatsoever. There seems to be no question of her actual guilt, just some gender/IQ issues. Sorry, I have NO sympathy at all.
