If the DeBeers cartel didn't limit their production they would be much, much cheaper. To get the "800 billion pounds" worth, they would have to sell them which would crash the market, thus they wouldn't be worth 800 billion pounds.

40 years ago the world boycotted Rhodesia because native blacks were believed to be supressed by white colonists.
Now, the world stares in surprize as Zimbabwe’s native blacks are murdered, starved and beaten by their own.
...maybe the white colonists who built the farms and infrastructure that Mguabe squandered weren’t so bad afterall.
That is a pretty odd and strong claim to put on the man, is that what he is known for, which Christian church was he pious in?
Maybe poverty IS largely due to local politics after all....

You also have to factor in that there are different grades of diamonds and different uses, not simply jewellery. diamonds are used in precision cutting tools etc. Also, diamonds actually have no value, its just a piece of useless rock. It only has value because society as a whole bought DeBeers nosense about diamonds being sentimentally valuable that it has decided to instill a price.
