A senior Nicaraguan diplomat in New York has been found dead with his throat slashed as world leaders gathered in the city for the UN General Assembly's annual meeting.
Cesar Mercado, 34, who has been based in New York for eight years, was found in his apartment in the Bronx when his driver came to pick him up.
The driver discovered the door closed but not locked and the diplomat's body lying just inside the blood-spattered flat, police said.
An NYPD spokesman said: "The knife was found on the floor next to him." Police were trying to establish a possible motive, and no suspects were immediately identified.
Mercado was a consulate officer and Nicaragua's de facto consul general. He was based in an office building near the UN headquarters in Manhattan.

Could this gentlement be somehow associated with Senor Chavez?
drug deal gone wrong.
A drug deal in this case sounds like a good cover. To quick and convenient. Hope the case not closed.
And if this same thing happened to a whole lot of U.N. folks would anyone lose a moments sleep?
I just posted this in a few articles above this one - apparently he was mixed up in something that he shouldn’t have been - goes to prove my point on UN appointed dip’s...
The UN needs to be thrown out of the US - and we as a nation - need to stop funding that corrupt organization...
They serve no other purpose than a bunch of leaders from countries that they themselves care nothing about. We waste so much time and money to bring people to a forum and PRETEND that they are like us - and that theres some kind of world order that actually cares about world order and protection...
If they really cared - they would enforce their so-called sanctions by force - end human trafficking - and the drug trade - hunt and destroy those that violate peace - but then again - thats the kind of people in the UN right now - the ones that need to be hunted down!
