He complained he'd sought donations from Hollywood for the World War II monument, that the 100 million had to be pledged before construction, and the studios which had made millions on the war wouldn't give a dime to honor its veterans.
Nothing could be greater than the gap between the traitor-rapist from Hot Springs and the horribly wounded veteran of that war.
He's an American veteran giving his best to the last.
Look, Bob Dole may have been the John McCain of the 1990s, but I would not go so far as to call him that.
Are you a war hero?
Assuming that you directed that comment to kevao, I'd like to add that his posts on this thread reveal him to be a donkey's rear end as well.
John McCain has proven, I hope beyond any further doubt, that a man's honorable, even heroic, service to this country does NOT necessarily have much to do with his quality as a political leader.
I wish we would separate the two qualities a bit more.
There were and are plenty of men and women whom I gratefully honor and respect for their service and character, but who I also would not want within 100 miles of political power.
And that is all that I am saying about Bob Dole. EXACTLY THAT!!! I always respected him for his service in WWII. And I still do to this day. And I will until the day he dies. And I will after he is dead.
But he drove me absolutely nuts in the 1990s as Senate Majority Leader -- because he was a RINO. There is no debating he was a RINO. Yes, he was a war hero. But, yes, he was also a RINO (although his endorsement of O'Donnell today endears him to me much more, and makes him less of a RINO than Mike Castle).
Bob Dole has my gratitude and my admiration for his service in war, in politics and in our Republican Party.
I am proud to said that I voted for Bob Dole in 1978 and 1996. Bob Dole was a beacon for our side in the dark days between Nixon and Reagan.
I am happy to stand with Bob Dole again.
Be well, Bob.
You could at least quote what I posted that you think makes me to be a donkey's rear end.
Yep. During the recount fiasco, Dole and Alan Simpson were invaluable as true elder statesmen of the Republican party.
That sounds like a correct answer. I think Quayle would’ve been better, too. He’s still 63. What about Colin Powell?
Was Dole considered more conservative than Ford in 1976?
Pretty much every Republican then was more conservative than Ford.
I am not sure what you are asking, but I think Colin Powell’s family was totally against his running(maybe afraid of assassination). I used to think I would really like him to run, but his service as SOS, was disappointing, so probably good he did not run.
I still respect the man’s service, but with his support of Obama, I have to say that his policies would not be to my liking.
I don’t think Quayle could have raised the money, because the media succeeded in making him into a joke, so he must have been pretty conservative.
You could at least quote what I posted that you think makes me to be a donkey's rear end. And then explain how that makes me to be a donkey's rear end.
God Bless this wonderful man and his family.
How completely unacceptable would he be as a VP if the Presidential Candidate might lack a little bit of foreign policy experience and maybe a little bit of gravitas?
Was Dole considered more conservative than Ford in 1976?
*************
My recollection is that Dole was considered tougher minded and more competent, which he was, but very abrasive, which he was. My view may be jaundiced as I was so mad at the treatment of Reagan at that time. That was the only presidential election I ever sat out.
I had four years to regret staying home.
“According to the logic that Ive seen used here on FR before, this now officially makes ODonnell a RINO.”
How true.
Did you notice upthread that Dole’s ACU ratings were 91 and 90 in his last two years in the Senate.
Pretty good numbers for a distinguished man, who draws derision from some people on this thread.
