Baker catches Patrick in new poll (MA governor's race)
Boston Globe ^ | September 26, 2010 | Frank Phillips and Michael Levenson

Posted on 09/26/2010 5:00:08 AM PDT by reaganaut1

With just five weeks to the election, Republican Charles D. Baker has pulled even with Governor Deval Patrick in a gubernatorial race shaped by anti-incumbent sentiment and unusually high excitement among Republican voters, according to a new Boston Globe poll.

The poll results also suggest that independent Timothy P. Cahill is pulling voters equally from Baker and Patrick, raising questions about the conventional political thinking that his candidacy is undercutting Baker’s chance to defeat the governor in the Nov. 2 election.

In the Globe poll, taken last week, Patrick, a Democrat, won support from 35 percent of likely voters, compared with 34 percent for Baker, a statistical tie given the poll’s margin of error. Cahill, the state treasurer who left the Democratic Party last year, continued to lag far behind with 11 percent. Green-Rainbow candidate Jill Stein got 4 percent, and 14 percent said they remain undecided.

Patrick has lost ground to Baker since the Globe last surveyed voters in June, when the governor led his Republican challenger, 38 to 31 percent. Cahill, damaged by negative ads from the Republican Governors Association, is having difficulty climbing back into a race in which he was once a major contender. His standing improved slightly from June, when he won the support of 9 percent of poll respondents.

The poll indicates that voter turnout on Election Day will be key. The current trend favors Baker, because Republicans are much more enthusiastic about the election than Democrats. Some 78 percent of likely GOP voters say they are excited about the race, compared with only 37 percent of likely Democratic voters. Among the subset of 245 voters surveyed who said they were excited about the race, Baker beat Patrick, 52 to 25 percent.

So, the even number is among registered voters, and among likely voters, Baker leads 2-1?

Gee, Obama is Deval Patrick’s BFF! Maybe he’ll come to MA to campaign for him! We can only hope. Maybe we’ll sweep ‘Marcia’ Coakley out of the attny. general’s office too. Next we target John ...did you know he served in Vietnam?...Kerry. When Kerry was ‘courting’ John Heinz’s widow, the Washington Post social column said he was ‘stalking’ her and facing bankruptcy. Now he’s the richest man in the senate. Who knew.

Keep your eyes on Massachusetts this year folks. I’m running against Olver in district one, the most blue of the blue in the bluest state in New England, AND WE ARE DOING WELL!

If Pravda-By-The-Charles says it’s even that means that Baker’s up by 10 points!! Looks like DNC Headquarters’ plan to offer Cahill a judgeship or a lucerative lobbying gig if he pretended to leave the RAT Party and then pretend to be to Coupe Deval’s right has failed.Last January was the first time in mmany,*many* years that I was even a *little* proud of being a Gay Stater....perhaps this November will be the second.

Since this comes from the Globe things must really be tough for Patrick. The Globe published a poll a week or so before the senate election last January showing Coakley with an insurmountable lead over Scott Brown. Didn’t quite turn out that way.

Baker's pro-abortion and pro-homo "marriage." He's another bloodless Weld RINO. I'm sick of them, and I'm seriously considering blanking the governor's race.

OTOH, I'm very excited about the congressional races. We have 12 dems in 12 seats. It's been that way for a loooong time. I'm hoping that we pick up three of them.

Don't know if you're a Howie Carr fan but if you are you've probably heard him mention that there was a time when Kerry was between billionaire heiresses when he was *living* in his Chrysler.

I tend in a working, union, biker bar. Not one of the lockstep Democrat union guys are going to vote again for Patrick. Old Pawn Shop Deval’s next job is making corporate contacts in a high Fedgov job in the last two years of the Obamanation.

The "happy valley?!" Wow!

And thank you for running! I ran for School Committee in a Blue town many years ago, and I know how unpleasant and exhausting campaigning can be.

A poll like that, a Globe poll means that Deval has lost Cambridge, Newton and Brookline. ( The only towns the Boston Glop knows of.)

And if you do Coupe Deval and all the folks at RAT Headquarters in Caracas (or have they moved to Tehran?) will be eternally grateful. As imperfect as Baker might be Coupe Deval 1000 times worse.

No,11 RATS in 12 seats.....10 Reps and "Live Shot".And as of 2012 we'll only have 11 seats...or maybe just 10 (I've read that we're *sure* to lose 1 and might lose 2).

If I had no integrity, I’d sign up for 6 “acorn” votes and vote twice for you(I’d have to save the other 4 for my local congressman)...(sarcasm on of course)!

Still best of luck to you!

Deval is completely useless, but is he any worse than any other Dem governor we've had? The legislature, even our Dem legislature, is constrained somewhat by fiscal realities. I really don't see Baker making much of a difference.

And the MOST important issues that we face are the social issues, and practically, the appointment of judges. I don't trust Baker any more than Coupe Deval.

I want a real alternative to the commies.

You're right about our representation. I thought we had 12 reps, not 10. We're 10 for 10 with Dems. I'm hoping that we pick up three. We've got a lot of GREAT, Tea Party-type Republican challengers. In this year of the Tea Party, it's very disappointing that we have such a crappy gubernatorial candidate.
