Washington Galvanized by the lightning-in-a-bottle success of conservative "tea party" candidates, moderate Republicans and others in the political center are looking for ways to push back against what they see as an advancing tide of ideological extremism.
"Middle America is being ignored by Washington and the media. Centrists are desperate for a voice today; they feel entirely unrepresented," said Mark McKinnon, a political strategist and former advisor to President George W. Bush.
"The tea party has tapped into voter frustration and anger," he said, "but does not represent millions of Americans in the vast middle."
The moves reflect political divisions that have only grown deeper as tea-party-backed insurgents have toppled candidates supported by the GOP establishment around the country.

Like the vast middle that went for Obama and are now switching over to the Tea Party? They are tired of your mushy positions, they want candidates who mean what they say.
Lisa Murkowski
Charlie Crist
Bob Bennett
Martha Coakley
Mike Castle
there are more names for this list...and more will be added on November 2. I hope that FR has enough bandwidth for it...
Bush aides involved. Typical. The only time the Bushes want something to do with conservatives is on Election Day; after that, they’re happy to throw as much mud at us as the liberals do.
Yes the vast middle that elected Bob Dole and John Mclame. LOL
Oh great.
The Rino Party.
Naturally, McKinnon, another RINO from the Bush administration, can’t see the forest for the trees. He is the armadillo in the middle of the road that will soon be roadkill. Clueless Bush advisers such as he is made Obama possible.
As Bush said “your either with us or against us”. The middle of the road has always been the most dangerous place.
Road Kill is what it’s called in Texas.
That will be the day a moderate “pushes back”.
By definition, they are weather vanes.
Now, a liberal pretending to be a moderate, well, that’s another story.
It is a little late to start organizing now, don’t you think?
“The tea party has tapped into voter frustration and anger,” he said, “but does not represent millions of Americans in the vast middle.”
Who does he think is at the TEA parties? It’s mostly the “vast middle” that this moron is talking about.
Great idea. Right on the verge of a big victory, split off and try to cause more division! Brilliant strategy. Amazing how the Republicans are the party with infighting now while the Dems, facing a big mess, still are managing somehow to stick together.
How many of these articles have we seen in the last few days?
Light a match to them and keep moving forward.
unless you want more of Harry, Nancy and Obozo.
What is the author smoking?
Our Tea Party group is a mix of Independents, Republicans and Democrats.
I wish these fools crying extremist would give just ONE example of what they believe is a tea party extremist political position. It must be that the Constitution itself is extremist in their eyes.
I swear why don’t they get it STILL?
Tea Parties want to push back against the marxist’s policies ... then govern from center right.
0bama is pushing HARD left, America is pushing back HARD right. That doesn’t mean they wanna govern from there - that’s just to get us back to America.
America is center right - like Reagan was.
People in the “middle” generally don’t give a crap. That is why they are in the middle. There is a war in this country between the left and the right and anyone who doesn’t choose sides is going to he caught in the crossfire.
‘Moderates’? These are liberals in denial. They weren’t so outspoken while Obamao’s marxism was busy steamrolling the country. Now that the Tea Party has come to derail the government gravy train and balance the country’s finances, they’re suddenly up in arms.
There’s a poll consistently released - I think it’s by Rasmussen, or maybe Gallup - that consistently shows people who call themselves conservatives vastly outnumbering the so-called ‘moderates’ and liberals. This is reflected perfectly in Alaska and Florida, where Miller and Rubio respectively have double-digit leads over the write-in ‘moderate’ and liberal.
Organizing the hesitant and the indecisive sounds like a theme for a Monty Python skit.
