‘Leaving California’ list grows to 144 firms for 2010 (34 in Orange County alone)
Orange County Register ^ | 09/23/2010 | Jan Norman

Posted on 09/26/2010 8:34:10 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Irvine consultant Joe Vranich, who has been compiling a list of companies leaving California because of the state’s anti-business environment, is now up to 144 companies that have departed in 2010, including 34 in Orange County.

In addition, he lists 51 companies (8 from Orange County) that left in 2009. That three-fold increase, Vranich says, is the tip of the iceberg that is California’s financial woes.

“Quite clearly, the exodus of businesses out of California continues. It makes sense for companies to reduce their California footprint considering the ample supply of attractive, lower-cost alternative locations. Unless California reduces its hostility toward business, we will see more commercial enterprises seeking friendlier locations in which to relocate entirely or at least place facilities there that used to be located here.”

Among the Orange County companies new to his list are Boeing, Kennametal Inc., Latex International, Multi-Fineline Elextronix Inc., NGK Spark Plug Co., Pipeline Software Inc., Smith Micro Software Inc. and Witt Heat Transfer Products Group, most of which have been previously reported by the Register. Vranich says Orange County may be over-represented on his list because news reports are one source of his information and the Register reports business comings and goings more than some publications.

Vranich doesn’t include in his list every company that opens a facility elsewhere. Here’s how he explains:

“I’ve excluded countless companies that are attempting to serve new territories or new customers, are expanding because the company is growing, or are acquiring companies located elsewhere. When events appear unrelated to California’s hostile business environment, I give the companies the benefit of the doubt and leave them off the list.

Which locations are benefiting from California’s exodus? Vranich says in a Fox&Hounds article:

Come to Buffalo, NY

4 distinct seasons to enjoy, each one lasting a perfect 3 months.

cost of living HALF what it is in California.

A NICE 5 bedroom house can be had for under $200K and many great 2 and 3 bedroom for under $100K

Growing internet hub- dqta center (because of the proximity to population. Half the country lives within 500 miles)

Companies and individuals are leaving California in record numbers for low or no tax states such as Nevada and Florida.

I spent quite a few years in upstate NY. 300 days a year of clouds. Plus, what do you call the day after two days of rain? “Monday”

Now I’ve got 300 days of sunshine a year. I’ve also got a bankrupt state with an Democrat-controlled anti-business attitude. But you’ve got that last part, too.

Was there not a huge battle, I think in the 80’s, wherein California tried to tax multinationls located there on their world wide income? I believe they lost that battle after quite a few years.

Funny how non state tax states seem to be getting some of the spoils here. It is not coincidental.

Question.

Is California a microcosm of America's economic policy?

Or, is America's economic policy a macrocosm of California?

Or, both?

What is affecting the seventh largest economy in the world is also affecting the second. The causes are the same and the results are the same.

See what happens when the individual states are no longer allowed to be the experimental laboratories for the rest of us. The adverse impacts can be fatal for all of us.

It is past time to break the power cartel that has established itself inside the beltway and return to policies that have been effective instead of adopting polices that are failures because they are advocated by people with a whole bunch of letters after their names.

they’re going to start leaving Oregon too after they passed laws that will harm small businesses here as wellby spreading the wealth around. It really is mind boggling to see people so short sighted and vote for an immediate benefit that will cut off their employment in the long run

I think in the 80’s, wherein California tried to tax multinationls located there on their world wide income?

CA taxed multinational entities on their world wide income based on a three factor formula of payroll, property, and sales. Based on that formula, that percentage was applied to world wide income and tax computed on that percentage. The entire world wide income was not taxed by CA. When water's edge was put in place, then all taxation stopped "at the edge of the water". So, multinationals simply raised the cost of good sold sky high so that their CA entities never showed a dime of profit and *bingo* no CA taxes.

After 50 years in SoCal, my husband’s company moved to Arizona. I am not a Leftist loon, by the way. I hope Arizonans will appreciate that we, two more Republicans, are here.
