The stimulus is frequently derided for not doing enough to fight unemployment, but one program that did nothing but create jobs is coming to an end.
According to NYT, a subsidized jobs program is coming to an end. The program allowed employers at the government, non-profit, and small business levels to get direct help paying worker salaries. It was modeled after a New Deal jobs program, and even GOP Governor Haley Barbour supported it.
But 26,000 jobs could be lost in Illinois alone. Another 12,000 will go in Philadelphia.
The problem with stimulus was that unless it created an actual sustainable recovery, it was never going to do much good in the long-term, and then when the money ran out, we'd be back to where we were before it started. Well, it didn't create a sustainable recovery, and now the money is running out.

NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE :
Job Loss Looms as Part of Stimulus Act Expires

EXCERPT
Tens of thousands of people will lose their jobs within weeks unless Congress extends one of the more effective job-creating programs in the $787 billion stimulus act: a $1 billion New Deal-style program that directly paid the salaries of unemployed people so they could get jobs in government, at nonprofit organizations and at many small businesses.
It has already run out but the fool running the country will just borrow more that we will have to pay back!
A couple weeks before the elections? Wow, talk about an October Surprise. Wonder how the GOP will screw this up?
Epic Fail
Did you expect differently? All these schemes are failing, as they should.
I suppose they were hoping the money would last until after the elections.
I don’t think the country is in any mood to extend anything with more ‘stimulus’ money, period.
This is just another example of how the ‘stimulus’ didn’t work and won’t work! It is a phony job creation.
We could have SAVED MONEY by handing out $20,000 to every man, woman and child in the United States instead of the mess we are dealing with now.
It’ll be a Merry Christmas for everyone who’s on Unemployment Benefits. /s
Just eliminate the income tax and corporate tax! Problem solved and unbridled economic growth!
What they are really saying is that thousands of government jobs (Federal and State) will be lost if we don’t vote Democratic. Too bad that they seem to not notice that we want to do exactly that! And yes, that means even those stupid arguments regarding Firefighters, Police, and Teachers. They have been so bloated for years that any changes would likely not be noticed.
yeah for the ever exploitive democrats how did they screw this date up?
I imagine they’ll put in overtime to find a way.
They should have known better, the program is ending at the end of the 2010 fiscal year — next Thursday.
Dear Mr. Obama ,
This is a serious note to you ..
I can create at least 15 permanent jobs with a $500,000.00 grant ,, a tiny fraction of the cost for a temporary job under your stimulus plans... Real jobs utilizing existing real estate and buildings I own outright to start a grocery in a rural Illinois town where people must travel 30+ miles round trip to a real grocery store or pay exhorbitant 7-11 prices for necessities. And with the leftover funds create an after-school center with a large indoor heated swimming pool a full sized basketball court (already exists with stadium seating for 1100) , internet access, game rooms a study/tutoring hall and much more...
RE: We could have SAVED MONEY by handing out $20,000 to every man, woman and child in the United States instead of the mess we are dealing with now.
That’s 6 TRILLION DOLLARS based on my calculations of
$20,000 X 300,000,000
Do we have that kind of money?
Certainly this was “expected”, right?
We could have actually improved the economy if we had just declared a tax moratorium. The economy would have taken off like a rocket and it would STILL have been cheaper then the pork fest they passed.
