First lady presents dignitaries with pickled veggies from White House garden

When searching for the perfect goodie bag items for U.N. spouses, first lady Michelle Obama made like Peter Piper and picked some pickled peppers.

Obama presented foreign dignitaries visiting New York last week for the U.N. General Assembly with a Longaberger basket filled with items from the White House garden, aides said. The treats include a jar of hand-picked, pickled vegetables such as sun gold tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, chocolate bell peppers and carrots.

The gifts were presented in a one-of-a-kind Longaberger, pricey baskets that are a staple of at-home shopping parties. According to the White House, a nickel tag is affixed to the outside of each basket and engraved with the words, "Made Exclusively for Michelle Obama."

That damned white house garden causes me more anger than anything else about that family. I mean, rationally I know the whole socialism thing is more important, but ah, christ, the implied insult to the average person when these smug silver spooners set up a damned organic vegetable farm in the white house garden - it makes my blood boil. Let them eat organic arugula? Anyone know what I mean.

Also I’ll eat my hat if any of these goldbricking Obamas has ever actually had anything to do with those vegetables beyond photo shoots.

It would be much more appropriate if the basket tags said “Made exclusively for the White House.” It seems tacky to have her own name on them. (As for pickled okra...ugh.)

I don’t even know what an okra is and I don’t want to.

Come on — it’s the principal ingredient in gumbo.

I must admit I don’t know what gumbo is either. I’ve heard ABOUT it, some southern thing?

How embarrassing. Keeping the “Made exclusively for Michelle Obama” tag on the baskets make them look re-gifted.

I don’t even know what an okra is and I don’t want to.

It's a fuzzy green vegetable about the size of Bill Clinton's appendage (according
to Paula Jones). When cooked, okra exudes a mucus that is perfect for grossing
out little sister. It also sticks nicely to walls if flung properly.

I wonder if they replaced all the toxic topsoil first?

I sure wouldn't be eating anything grown there.

What a hoot. (BTW, has anyone ever found out what the large tarp covering that whole side of the WH was about? Was it to get rid of the rat problem we know they had - or did they bring bed bugs down from Chi Town too?

It’s actually a nice gift. They were made by one of the best culinary teams in the world and impossible for anyone else to get one. Celebrities like things no one else can get. That makes for the best items for charities to raise funds with.

Second homemade goodies taste much better than the store bought. I just made something like 13 quarts of pickles (bread & butter, refrigerator and sandwich). They are great. While I wouldn’t like pickled okra (I can’t think of a good use for that stuff but that’s personal taste) I know people who love okra in any form. Of course I eat kidneys, tongue, liver, sweetbreads, ox tails, etc so there is no accounting for taste.

Personally I’d rather have something like this than some nifty glass bowl. Of course it would have been a better gift if Mrs Obama had done the work, but you can’t expect royalty to get their hands dirty.

I think this is the first time I’ve stood up for the Obams’s so you’ve done well.

I hear Longaberger, I think Tupperwear. I’m sure there are some happy hotel maids with their new baskets from work.
