IPhone Demand Outstrips Supply in China
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2010-09-27 | Owen Fletcher

BEIJING—China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. said its supply of Apple Inc.'s iPhone 4 handsets is insufficient to meet user demand but that it will increase its supply as quickly as possible. Sales of the model started at a much faster pace than when older versions of the iPhone went on sale in China last year.

Unicom had received more than 200,000 iPhone 4 preorders by early Saturday, the day sales started, and more than 40,000 buyers received the phone and a bundled mobile-service plan that day, Unicom said. By comparison, Unicom last year sold 100,000 iPhone handsets in roughly six weeks after officially introducing the devices in China in late October.

The faster start to iPhone 4 sales comes as Apple has started shortening the time between introducing its devices in the U.S. and China...

[Apple] opened two stores over the weekend, doubling its total in the country, as part of plans to add a total of 25 by the end of next year...

I picked up several Android-based phones at the AT&T store a few weeks back when I got my iPhone 4 - The Samsung units seemed “nicer” than the other models - but still, to me, felt flimsy and “cheaply made”. My Step-father called me about that time as he was shopping for a new phone - and was seriously considering iPhone 4 or the Samsung. He opted for the Samsung.

I will admit, other than feeling “flimsy”, it was a nice phone with a very clear display. Very bright (battery life?) and the screen was responsive to touch.

But what else goes in to making it “The” phone to get? Nothing while I was holding it and flipping through menus and such made me really “want” it.

Is 4G service available where you will spend most of your time?

If you already have an iPhone 4, you probably don't see much in the way of anything enticing you to switch. If I had the latest iPhone, neither would I.

However, unlimited data/SMS plans from Sprint for a single line is something like $39.95/mo even in 4G networks. That's the total monthly bill for using the phone with data as much as you want. I think that some AT&T people pay that much a month for their iPhone's data plan alone. Maybe that's more attractive than what you're paying at AT&T?

The Epic is $250 on contract, the iPhone 4 starts at $200. I realize Sprint service is cheaper, but the phone itself isn’t cheaper.

I have a Vibrant, the screen doesn’t blow the iPhone away. They are even at best for the Vibrant. The apps aren’t quite as good generally, using the store is nowhere near the App store.

Not sure what all comes with the Epic, but the Vibrant was loaded with bloatware.

One other thing to consider, and I hadn't until I picked up my Iphone 4 on Friday, was resale. I was going to go with just the 16 gig Iphone and keep my 16 gig 3G as basically and Ipod Touch. The salesman I called at the AT&T store said that it would also get good money on Ebay.

He wasn't kidding. 8 gig 3G, jailbroken, Iphones are fetching well over $150-$200. So I went ahead and got the 32 gig model. I figure I can easily jump up to the Iphone 5 when it comes out with very little net cost to me for the phone.

With Sprint, at least, there are so many promo codes out there for $50 off the already rebated Sprint price of $250 that the guys at Sprint just knock it off at the counter for customers with eligible service extensions or upgrades. I just got one from the NRA for this promo. Even if you don't have one, they'll probably sneak you into one that they already have on file.

The Epic is $200 when all rebates and promos are counted in.

> Apple is in the perfect supply/demand position. No big inventories - and units shipping as they come in. What’s great for Apple - if demand slows, they are in a position to slow production and not end up with warehouses full.

Anybody who questions whether Apple's business model and strategy are wise (you know, the folks who harp on and on about marketshare?) should take a look at what Apple is accomplishing in a tough economy. It's freakin' brilliant business.

> Anyone seen a total unit sales figure for the iPhone 4?

Not I, but perhaps Swordmaker or RachelFaith have those numbers. I'll ping 'em...

I just purchased an iPhone 4 last Friday, and going to sell my Phone 3 GS. Love it, and I can see why it’s in high demand.

Same here last Tuesday. I sold my 3G on Gazelle.com....

That's the one with the Super AMOLED screen that blows everything else away, has the wireless hub for five more Internet connections, supports 4G where available, 1280 x 720 HD video recording, a pretty darn good still camera, and doubles as an in-car GPS Nav. It's also fairly light for it's size.

That's what I like about phones these days, differing feature sets so you can pick what's most important to you. That AMOLED is great for power consumption and is pretty bright, but still lower-res than the iPhone. It seems to balance-out that the iPhone CPU requires less battery to play a video. The camera is lower quality than the iPhone's. And if you're one of the few people who can take advantage of the semi-4G available, that's the phone for you. And don't forget that the 3D is twice as powerful as the iPhone's if you're seriously into games on your phone.

Right now, the Samsung Epic (Galaxy S) beats the latest top end 4G iPhone in reliability, features, ingenuity, and price.

The iPhone 4 is not 4G. They're also both the same price with contract for base versions: the 2 GB Galaxy and the 32 GB iPhone. Features? Where's that camera flash? As far as reliability, are you one of the many having severe GPS problems? Are you one of the many complaining about the cheap plastic feel of the phone? Every phone has its downsides.

Ingenuity? That's a tricky one. The Galaxy is pretty much the standard high-end phone package. What seems to be the ingenuity part? The AMOLED screen?

“I just purchased an iPhone 4 last Friday....”

Me too. Friday afternoon. Passed my iPhone 3G to the little lady. She is absolutely in love with it. And I’m certain it will stay that way until she gets on my i4.

Very bright (battery life?)

That's the AMOLED screen. BTW, they also both have Gorilla Glass for the cover to protect from scratches. If I were re-buying an Android phone right now, it's definitely the one I'd get.

The Samsung I checked out at the retail location must not have had that screen (Gorilla Glass) - as it felt “soft” to the touch... lots of flex and very light weight. It was quite bright, though.
