“So, which gang? MS 13?”
Fortunately for the cops, he was apparently a member of the gang that couldn’t shoot straight;)

Officers immediately returned fire with their weapons, striking the gunman several times and killing him.
None of the officers was hit in the gunfight nor were any innocent by-standers injured.
Police train for this scenario all the time, Perps watch movies and tv shows. Cops hit their targets center mass.... perps hit the pavement.

Well, that explains the noisy commotion and gunshots I heard. I was working a few blocks from there and swore I heard gunshots, yelling and screaming while I was on my phone with the lady friend.
Outside of all of the real stuff happening this still isn't that unusual in LA, cuz we are always filming some type of gunfights and chases in and around the downtown area. You know, In this case I suppose it was kinda like real life imitating art :-)

The officers following the vehicle already knew the vehicle was involved in a carjacking a day earlier....I understand they followed it for quite a while and when the suspect went down the deadened road, he stopped, exited and started shooting.
You can bet the rent the officer's probably had their shotguns out and met this guy with substantial simultaneous fire.

Journalist guide to firearms identification. Love it.
The UT shooter also was reported to be firing an AK.
Every bad guy has an AK.

Somthing ya won't forget for a while..
Glad the suspect was the only one that died... One less cockroach on the street.

LAPD officials say officers were following the convicted felon through the Downtown L.A. area when suddenly he stopped, stepped out of his car and opened fire at officers with the assault rifle. I thought it was illegal for covicted felons to own weapons. I also thought AK-47's were illegal in CA.

Ended really well...You bet...
This had to be one really scary event, for even the most seasoned cop...
Reminds me of what happened some years ago, when it didn't end so well for a LASD Deputy when an illegal alien exited a van at during a late night traffic stop. The illegal opens up on the patrol unit, shredding the patrol unit with lots of rounds, and the driver deputy took one in the head..
Long story short, the deputy survived after tons of therapy and they caught the cockroach down in Mexico, and brought the SOB back.

Forgot the mention, this incident too occurred when that suspect to had an AK and opened up on the patrol unit. The patrol unit had a whole lot of bullet holes in it.

they caught the cockroach down in Mexico, and brought the SOB back.
If the story goes right, since he was already tried and sentenced, he was executed immediately as the crossed the border..

I understand the suspect shooter has like 14 holes in him. Obvious overreaction by the police. Surely they could have taken him down with one shot. Probably non lethal force should have been attempted first. Did they even ask him to surrender before they opened fire. /sarc.

No. I don’t have family that would fire on police with an AK-47.
