NPR will be one of the dominant forces in media in ten years because their membership-based funding model is finely tuned to the habits of millennial news consumers. That's the prophecy of Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and a new media philosopher. 

"Only very recently have I been thinking about the successful news organizations, he said, responding to a question from James Fallows at the Washington Ideas Forum. "I have a feeling that membership models and philanthrophy models will be stronger than advertising-supported models, people will be willing to pay for news they can trust."

And trust, he said, "is the new black."

"News organizations that are successful are the one that are going to be restoring the traditional values like fact-checking." He said "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central is more faithful to the traditional model of journalism than any other show. "I'm joking, but I'm not really joking."

Only if the First Amendment is completely struck down, MSNBC (note they have the lowest ratings) is shut down in the process, NPR is the only thing broadcast on the radio, NPR gets MSNBC’s television broadcasting equipment, and internet sites have to be government approved before publish.

They sound like the same people who tout that soccer is the fastest growing sport around and will overshadow NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball in 15-20 years. I’ve been hearing that for 30 years. In that time, MLS has barely gained a toe-hold in the marketplace.

The only reason NPR exists is because it’s living on government grants.

I listened to NPR once. It was about seven years ago. I was driving through very remote woods, and when I hit auto search the radio kept landing on NPR. It was the only station that came in, with that announcer who sounds like she is on heavy medication. It was a glimpse of hell!

I suppose NPR might be Number One with insomniacs yearning for something to make them drowsy.

How isn’t this “craigslist” guy in jail? For years he profited from interstate prostitution. Even after removing the “adult” section of his site (again....after YEARS), it is still a haven for crime.

I’ll bet there isn’t a day that goes by where some dimwit innocent shows up at some address to pay cash for an iphone or ipad and gets the tar beaten out of him and his cash taken.

The site needs to be shut down and he needs to pay restitution to his own victims. He certainly doesn’t need to be out there telling ME where I’m going to get my news.
