Cookie Shop Accused Of Refusing 'Coming Out Day' Order

INDIANAPOLIS -- A cookie shop at Indianapolis' City Market is being investigated after a university said the business refused to fill an order for a National Coming Out Day celebration.

Heather Browning, a coordinator for social justice education in the Office of Student Involvement at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis, was organizing the Oct. 7 event, aimed at encouraging coming out and discussion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues.

She told 6News' Joanna Massee that she called Just Cookies to inquire about getting rainbow cookies made for the event.

"When I explained it to him the nature of the celebration, the gentleman told me that it was against their morals and values to do so, and then hung up on me," Browning said.

City spokesman Robert Vane said the city will launch an investigation next week to determine if Just Cookies, which has operated inside the City Market since the 1990s, violated Indianapolis' anti-discriminatory ordinance.

"Growing the City Market through offering a better product means little when the people offering a better product can decide who they want to sell to and who they don't," Vane said.

Well, the customers can decide who they want to buy from and who they don't, isn't that true Mr. Vane?

Besides, as noted earlier up thread it was originally cupcakes that were ordered and the store owner said she told them they didn't do cupcakes.

Take an honest poll, and I'm betting the people in that area would rally 70% for the bakery owners. People are getting sick of this harrassment from gays.

“Now, the outraged party is claiming they ordered cookies all along, “

Exactly, a lying group of pervert advocates trying to force people to accept their beliefs. But you have no right to your own beliefs. And the news media carries their water for them.

>>> When the story was reported originally, the outraged party had ordered cupcakes, and the store owner refused because they don't sell cupcakes. Now, the outraged party is claiming they ordered cookies all along, and the owner of the bakery is not commenting.

And if you read the original reports further, the proprietor FIRST said they don't make cupcakes, THEN said the order was refused because they lacked the necessary supplies, and LATER said they refused the order because he had two daughters and feared this would be a bad influence. Three versions to choose from. Of all possible reasons to cripple your own livelihood, frosting on some little cakes has to be one of the most foolish.

Seriously, does this turn you toward the dark side ? And what sort of person can you imagine it would.

The owners have been adivsed not to comment further because the media is clearly on a pro-homosexual jihad and a seeking to use this incident to crucify them. They have misrepresented their statements and nothing good can come from commenting. They are in touch with the Alliance Defense Fund and that's who should be doing the talking. Please keep these good Christian people in your prayers. And by the way, they are a cookie shop not a bakery.

These points are not mutually exclusive. In fact the second follows naturally from the first. They are being vilified becasue of their religion. Sacrificed on the alter of PC correctness gone amok. Beware - all of us Christians are next.

The whole point is to wear people down. Make them so tired of dealing with this that they will give ANYTHING to get rid of it. Then demand your whole agenda. It's the way we are getting "gay marriage" in America.

They asked three people and got three answers. If they had gotten three answers from the same person or if the three people gave exactly the same response I would be more concerned.

What it sounds like to me is The special order was legitimately refused and then a few days later The orderer started thinking about it and decided they had been brutally offended and started lawyer shopping. The bakery personnel were speculating about what happened to a reporter.

Just the drive bys trying to stir things up again

So, in other words, you favor government coercion to force people to act against their moral principles or lose their livelihood.

Nothing remotely conservative about that. Nothing authentically "progressive" about it, either. It's just plain old fascism.

The government has no business telling anyone they have to express a particular moral, social, religious, or any other viewpoint or risk losing their business, their liberty, or their life.

If somebody opened a bakery that only baked cakes for "gay marriages" [sic], would you like the government to force them to bake cakes for straight weddings as well? Same principle.

I think Thomas Sowell said it best: "The problem with splitting the difference between opposing sides, as many negotiators are prone to do— whether these negotiators are marriage counselors, labor arbitrators or the United Nations— is that this gives an advantage to the side with the most unreasonable demands, and therefore promotes more unreasonable demands in the future."

There is great wisdom in tact. To decide to not sell something is fine. But to sneer at someone while doing so is not—and it doesn’t matter what the reason.

To do so is done not to reject, but to offend. It makes it personal.

Use the ginger (redhead) rule, to tell if something is tactful or not.

“When I explained it to him that I was a redhead, the gentleman told me that it was against their morals and values to do so, and then hung up on me.”

If he did this to a ginger, would the ginger be offended? If so, then it is probably tactless.

“So find a DIFFERENT cookie shop you whining moron. That’s what a free market is SUPPOSED to be all about.”

No, no, that wouldn’t accomplish their agenda which is to make people accept their way of thinking and behaving as normal and worthy of celebrating. Shame, shame on the cookie man for not coming around to their way of thinking and becoming part of the collective group think.

Makes me think of the “Twilight Zone” or “Outer Limits” episode when the young woman is waiting for surgery to make her look like the everyone else, who it turns out all look like pigs.

The "outraged party" apparently did want cupcakes all along, judging from its subsequent decision to order, um, rainbow-themed cupcakes from another Indianapolis bakery, the very aptly named "Flying Cupcake."
