Meg Whitman and the GOP's emerging austerity caucus
Seattle Times ^ | October 1, 2010 | David Brooks

Posted on 10/02/2010 9:43:07 AM PDT by calcowgirl

(snip)

Whitman is representative of an emerging Republican type — what you might call the austerity caucus. Flamboyant performers like Sarah Palin get all the attention, but the governing soul of the party is to be found in statehouses where a loose confederation of uber-wonks have become militant budget balancers. Just as welfare reformers of the 1990s presaged compassionate conservatism, so the austerity brigades presage the national party's next chapter.

Mitch Daniels, the governor of Indiana who I think is most likely to win the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, is the spiritual leader. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey is the rising star. Jeb Bush is the eminence. Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Rob Portman, a Senate candidate in Ohio, also fit the mold.

These are people who can happily spend hours in the budget weeds looking for efficiencies. They're being assisted by budget experts from the Hoover Institution, the Manhattan Institute and freelancers like Bob Grady, who did budgeting in George H.W. Bush's administration. Members of the caucus have a similar sense of the role history has assigned them. "This state had a party for 10 years and I'm the guy who got called in to clean up the mess," Christie says.

Christie is the Hot New Thing in the group . . .

Prop 13 was related to local county property tax increases that were driving retirees out of their homes and had damn little to do with the state taxes...

nobody wants moonbeam, he was a delusional idiot then and he is now,,

a word of advice.. if ya see calcowgirl posted a thread, don’t click on it.. save everyone a melodramatic attack and try lightening up a bit ,,

the way things are going here, it won’t matter much who’s running things when the bottom falls out,, just a matter of time..

geeesshh,, now I remember why I don’t hang on these threads or FR much anymore.. now back to Oregon beating Stanford.

Brown's non stop spending and tax increases lead to a tax revolt and Prop 13 was one way to cut off the Leftist in Sacramento. Jerry Brown LEAD the last attack to stop Prop 13 and NOW he wants is leading a NEW Charge to destroy it as Governor !

The SEIU and CNA want to destroy Prop 13 . AS Governor Brown will have a very leftist media and State House and the Courts . Brown will be able to overturn Prop 13 and jack up the UNION PENSION etccc.

Just goggle Brown and Prop 13 and read all about Jerry's activities .

and actually tossed out some misinformation about Peter Wilson and Arnold being bigger tax increasers than JERRY “Prop 13 “ BROWN

Pete Wilson rammed through the largest tax increase in California history in 1991. That's a fact. Jerry Brown had been gone for 9 years by then. Yes, Pete Wilson was a bigger tax raiser than Jerry Brown by far.

Last year Arnold, with the help of his political whore Abel Maldonado, rammed through the highest tax increase in California History - higher than Jerry Brown AND Pete Wilson.

Those are indisputable facts. Once again calcowgirl is right. Jerry Brown, Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all been disasters and largely responsible for the fiscal mess that California is in today. Why anyone who would take the time to register at Free Republic would defend any one of them is beyond me.

Don’t blame me! I didn’t vote for Jeree Brown then and I’m not voting for him now. Brown cost me thousands of dollars when he stopped all highway construction in Cal because he wanted everyone riding bicycles. Prop 13 was the brain child of Howard Jarvis and it dealt strictly with County property taxes at the local level...

Jerry Brown's non stop stop tax and spend binge created Prop 13 TAX REVOLT.
Here is Pete Wilson tax record . But so what ?

http://www.caltax.org/MEMBER/digest/dec98/dec98-4.htm

The latest tax increase was a result of old legislative trigger regarding low tax revenue.

But who cares anymore its a distraction from stopping radical Jerry Brown who that poster supports !

If Calwhatever stops sending me BS posts trashing Meg Whitman and defending Jerry brown using misinformation then I won't reply. I did not post her . She sent me an unwanted/ ridiculous post.

Jerry Brown wants to destroy Prop 13 to help his UNION thugs. And he will if elected.

As I remember it from back then (I lived there then) Brown raised taxes and built up a huge budget surplus in Sacramento, this led to the Jarvis tax revolt. Brown was bad on so many levels as governor of CA I shudder at the thought of the state repeating history.

His main goal is to kill off Prop 13 .

He wants revenge on all the serfs that revolted against him.

Arnold is No Repub but not a tax raiser!

Arnold is a flaming failure and sure as Hell has allowed taxes to increase.

Once again — the thread is NOT about Jerry Brown. Correcting your BS is not “defending” Brown. Study some California history, Please!

ncalburt....Worthless Republicans...those blessed by the big-tenters have brought the citizens of the Golden State nothing but woe. Maybe some folks need to take a walk and an asprin before blowing a fuse.

This entire Meg Whitman conversation seems to be the same old meme.....My ‘r’ isn’t as bad as the ‘d’... The GOP insists on giving us the same choice...the lesser of the evils. There is a fact, we all must face...the GOP, especially in California no longer supports or funds CONSERVATIVE candidates. McCain and Whitman are the proof of that.

As for ‘nannygate’, there’s plenty of blame to go around.
And Meg shares in much of it. Some posters would defend the R, if it was Hitler. A waste of time. I do my best to ignore their posts because the issue always comes down to attacking the messenger because they can’t defend their Rino de jour.

Plenty of Californians are looking for an actual conservative to vote for. There is one, though the almighty republican party will never get behind her.

If Californians actually cared about California, they would have supported Chelene Nightingale long ago and we wouldn’t have to be putting up with Meg’s ‘nannygate’ and coddling illegal aliens today.

Welcome to Nightingale For Governor !!
Oct 1, 2010

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Nightingale for Governor 2010 website. If you are like many California citizens… frustrated by the lack of interest my opponents Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman show in the important issues… you have come to the right place.

As a “Tea Party” candidate, my campaign is centered on the issues you, the California voter, demand to have addressed by your next governor.

I lived in Los Angeles from 1976, to 2006. All of what you say is true. Pete Wilson was and IS a RINO, and Ahnold is a SUPER RINO.

Ncalburt, you are new here. Calcowgirl has been here around 10 years. Watch who you call a troll. The bell just might toll for thee!

She’s never defended Unions or Acorn or Jerry Brown or any liberal notion or person that I’ve ever seen. The problem is this, Ace. There are a bunch of Republicans, many even in California, lots in the NE & NW regions of the country that are LIBERALS. Yes, that’s right. Left-leaning republicans.

FR is NOT a GOP site, as I’ve told you before. It is a CONSERVATIVE site. So you know what that means, ace?

That means those of us who cannot tolerate leftism and socialism, regardless of which letter the idiot politician has next to his name, are going to slam leftwing Republicans. And the party chinslurps will continue to defend them too, I reckon.

But enough of the drama queen anguish.

I don't care Arnold or Pete Wilson , its a distraction from stopping Moonbeam.

That poster send me a post mocking the facts about Jerry Brown's disastrous history and defending Jerry Brown.

If that poster does not want to hear from me then don't
send me false snide posts .

I have no interest in reading her BS snide comments.

These nihilistic comments are irrational.
