CA: A New Breed of Home Marijuana Grower

A New Breed of Home Marijuana Grower

California -- Joanne Clarke, a legal secretary in her late 50s, leads the way down a pale green hallway in her modest Costa Mesa home, past a small guest room on the right and a blue tiled bathroom on the left. At the end of the hall, she opens a door, pushes aside a thick black curtain and ducks inside.

"Isn't this wild?" she says, gesturing to the high-tech marijuana grow room she and her husband recently installed. "This used to be my daughter's bedroom."

Wild is one word for it. Bright is another. Unexpected, yet another. What had been a teenager's tropical-themed room is now a beaming, humming, indoor plant laboratory complete with silver reflective bubble wrap on the walls, blinding grow lights, ventilation ducts hanging from the ceiling and marijuana plants in various stages of development neatly labeled with names such as Platinum Kush, Purple Diesel and Blue Cheese.

"They are like our children," Clarke says, gazing proudly at the elegant fronds that look familiar and exotic all at once. "We talk to them."

Clarke's grow room is legal — in the state of California, anyone with a doctor's recommendation to use marijuana can grow it in limited quantities — yet it still feels clandestine. Although she's open about using pot (crushed and placed in capsules) to help manage the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, she and her husband haven't shown the room to any friends. "Ninety-five percent of the people I know are fine with it," she says, "but it's that 5% that I worry about. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable."

You are correct, but you're being a bit dramatic, in that most small time growers never partake in any of the stuff you've referenced.

The entire goal is to fly under the radar. If you get into a shootout or burn your house down, you have vailed in that goal.

Kids today are rookies!

Even Gramma and Grampa get greedy when they see how easy it is to grow. There are 6 or 7 LARGE grower supply warehouses in Eureka/Arcata and a few more in the smaller towns in Humboldt County selling to the indoor and outdoor grower

Yep, and she is probably a great secretary, I have also heard it said, thou shalt not burn weed is not in the 10 commandments, what if Jesus wants a hit in Heaven and all one can remember is all the peaceful decent folks they persecuted..or will they simply tell God don’t do that!!
Just hypothetical obviously..just sayin..

Okay, okay, okay. All of you who slammed me for my comments, I need to be honest with you. I'm jealous of this druggies. Every job I have ever had, military, sheriff's deputy, truck driver, all really frown upon their people smoking weed. I think if I ever had the opportunity to partake in the weed, I just may like it.
I also have one other concern weed smokers. If a person drinks alcohol, drives a vehicle and gets pulled over, there is a way to test him/her for how drunk they are. A weed smoker, there is no test for that. The effects of weed can be just as effective on a person as alcohol. How are the police supposed to test for that when there is no test?? Can someone explain this me?? And don't forget, I've spent decades in the law enforcement and you can't bullshit a bullshitter. So to speak, lol.
