How Do We Improve the Public Schools??
rantrave.com ^ | Oct. 5, 2010 | Bruce Deitrick Price

Here's my sin: I'm trying to find some grounds for optimism. Achilles2000 (and others) say, forget it:

"The only thing in the middle of the road is road kill ;-)

For those who care about America and liberty, there is exactly one right answer - education by government must end."

I don't say this is wrong, just that I don't think anything so drastic will actually happen. Conservatives might take over Congress. This is no time to assume the worst.

Meanwhile, the main thing I'm struck by as I read comments on many sites is that the average American doesn't know anything about the idiotic ideas loose in the public schools. We are up against a brilliant PR machinery. If people understood what scam artists the Education Establishment is, there would be wholesale revulsion.

Anyway, for anyone still interested in this debate, here's a piece that tries to sketch the big picture quickly. Full title: "Public Schools Are Worse Than Most People Believe. And Have Been For Far Longer Than Most People Realize."

This is my attempt at counter-PR.

Government education won’t be stopped from the top, but people can stop using it.

How about we stop giving condoms to 9 year olds and telling them how they can have sex with anything that moves and if it feels good, do it.

Al Gore’s movie is “education”?

Better to dump public schools altogether or force them all to be run by run by the parents. Each school locally operated by a board chosen by the students parents.

Break the union! And if that doesn’t work, burn them to the ground and let the kids learn at home.

""The faith of our experts is not faith in the ability of all to solve problems but the reverse. The material which would enable the individual to work out his own salvation is practically withheld in order that he may be more receptive to the ready-made solutions that are handed out.""

That one is a winner for sure! Fire the teachers and rent out the buildings to those who can really educate our children.

BOYCOTT GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

Parents need to give up the big houses, fine cars, and lavish lifestyles and send their kids to private schools.

Here are the things necessary to save US Public Schools:

1. Break the unions that have a stranglehold on any educational progress for students

2. Engage accountability at all levels of education

3. Get the federal government out of education forever

4. Better textbooks that do not whitewash or revise our nation’s history in any way: textbooks need to tell the whole truth as well as instruct

5. Expand the school year

6. Eliminate the massive bureaucracy of education

7. More tests to determine strengths as well as failings for both students and teachers

8. Hold teachers as well as administration svvountable for failure; pay good teachers more and get rid of non performing teachers

9. Concentrate on the basics: reading, writing and arithmatic

Response: Recognize the vast intellectual gap decreed by nature and adjust to it.

Each school locally operated by a board chosen by the students parents.

Are you insane? That is like saying only goverment employees and those on the dole can vote. If someone else is paying the bills, these parents have absolutely no reservation in providing only the best to their brood of reprobates. They will vote in free comprehensive school-provided health care, three square meals a day including weekends, computers they can keep after graduation, sports colliseums rivaling pro sport franchises, IMAX in the classroom, etc.
